Zizioulas? Once much appreciated when he first began writing but now seen as suspect in his ecclesiological writings, by the Orthodox at least. Over the years his ecclesiology has moved closer to that of Rome.

Oh, please, Stuart. Metropolitan John speaks for the Orthodox about as much as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin spoke for the Romans. If you want the Orthodox viewpoint, look to Moscow, Athos or Belgrade. Constantinople seems to have forgotten it.

Well sometimes I fear the Unia is a noble, but failed experiment. Bishop Zoghby restores hope, however idealistic.

I would say the Romanian Catholic monastic community in Southern California live the Zoghybist catechism in its purest sense. Now the difficult part is attempting to live that same ideal as a member of the laity.

I wholeheartedly embrace the so-called "Zoghby Initiative," and affirm that:

(1) I believe everything which Eastern Orthodoxy teaches.
(2) I am in communion with the Bishop of Rome as the first among the bishops, according to the limits recognized by the Holy Fathers of the East during the first millennium, before the separation.


Moreover, I agree with Melkite Archbishop Zoghby who said: ". . . Vatican I has the same designation as the Council of Lyons, a 'general' synod of the West. With this designation it is neither ecumenical nor infallible and could produce only theological opinions that can not be imposed on anyone." [Archbishop Elias Zoghby, "Ecumenical Reflections"]

And I also agree with the Melkite Patriarch who has said: "We must explain and clarify the topics that are obstacles to our full communion [with the Orthodox]: Primacy of the Pope of Rome, Western Councils which cannot be recognized as Ecumenical Councils (as it has been admitted by highly qualified Western theologians since Pope Paul VI) . . ."

The really scary part of this statement is that, for so many, Fr. Teihard's theories are still circulated in so many circles in the Latin Church. Even though Rome has reaffirmed that his writings are theologically off the mark during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, it's still going on.
