The council of Bishops elected Jbeil Bishop Bechara el Rahi as new Maronite Patriarch following the resignation of Patriach Nasrallah Sfeir earlier this year.

The Syrian Patriarch Ignace Joseph Younan, elected on Jan 20, 2009, confirmed on Jan 22, 2009 Thanks. I guess my qualifier "other than Benedict" wasn't necessary after all. Follow-up question: what does it mean to say that the election was "confirmed"?
