CWN - Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawardros II has cancelled his regular weekly public audiences because of a spate of violent attacks on Christians in Egypt.

The Egyptian prelate said that he would not be holding his Wednesday audiences again for an indefinite period. He said that he would instead use the time to pray for the victims of volence. This is the second time that he has suspended his weekly audiences because of sectarian violence; he cancelled audiences for ten weeks in 2013.

The Coptic leader took this step after a Coptic Christian was killed in an assault by Muslim extremists in Minya on July 17, and several homes of Copts were attacked by a mob in Beni Suef.

Pope Tawadros customarily holds his weekly audiences in Cairo.

Rejoice, O Mother of God, Virgin full of grace. * From you has risen the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, * shining upon those who are in darkness. * Rejoice also, you righteous Elder; * for you received in your arms the Deliverer of our souls, * Who has given us resurrection. (Troparion, Tone 1)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O Christ God, through Your birth You sanctified the Virgin's womb; * and blessed, as it was proper, the hands of Simeon. * Now, having come, you saved us. * Give peace to Your commonwealth in times of war * and strengthen our civil authorities, whom You have loved, O You who alone loves mankind. (Kontakion, Tone 1)

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

Faith and love which are gifts of the Holy Spirit are such great and powerful means that a person who has them can easily, and with joy and consolation, go the way Jesus Christ went. Besides this, the Holy Spirit gives man the power to resist the delusions of the world so that although he makes use of earthly good, yet he uses them as a temporary visitor, without attaching his heart to them. But a man who has not got the Holy Spirit, despite all his learning and prudence, is always more or less a slave and worshipper of the world.

St. Innocent of Irkutsk, Indication of the Way into the Kingdom of Heaven.
