Video Video: A Brief Explanation of the Eastern Catholic Churches

The Catholic Church is a communion of churches. It is made up of churches from the Eastern Tradition and the Western Tradition. Every Catholic has a responsibility for understanding the fullness of the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II has said, "The church must learn to breathe again with its two lungs, its Eastern one and its Western one." In assessing the current situation, Cardinal William Baum has stated, "It is clear that, despite progress in this area, there is still a need among Catholics of the Latin tradition for a great deal of knowledge of the peoples, traditions and churches of the Christian East". (Jan 6, 1987, #15)

Teachings of Christ

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’" (John 7:37-38 ESV)

Lenten Prayer of St. Ephrem

O Lord and Master of my life, drive away from me the spirit of despondency, carelessness, love of power, and idle chatter. (Prostration)

Rather grant to me, Your servant, the spirit of wholeness of being, humility, patience, and love. (Prostration)

Yes, O Lord and King, grant that I may see my own faults and not condemn my brother; for You are blessed to the ages of ages. Amen. (Prostration)

Random Proverb

"Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you." (Proverbs 3:28 ESV)

Pray Without Ceasing

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

God is a fire that warms and kindles the heart and inward parts. Hence, if we feel in our hearts the cold that comes from the devil - for the devil is cold - let us call on the Lord. He will come to warm our hearts with perfect love, not only for Him but also for our neighbor, and the cold of him who hates the good will flee before the heat of His countenance.

St. Seraphim of Sarov
