International conference on violence against Middle East’s religious minorities

CWN - Representatives of 56 nations and 11 international organizations gathered in Paris to discuss how best to assist the victims of ethnic and religious violence in the Middle East.

The meeting was hosted by the foreign ministers of France and Jordan.

Participants adopted an action plan that included “supporting affected populations and facilitating durable solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons, fighting impunity and ensuring justice,” and “preserving the diversity and plurality of the Middle East.

Addressing the participants, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, lamented the “unprecedented atrocities” of the past year and called for a change in the legal culture of the Middle East that would allow for freedom to convert as well as to worship.

The prelate also asked the international community to “guarantee the right of refugees to return to their homeland and live in dignity and security” and called upon nations to ensure that their schools foster understanding rather than extremism.

Teachings of Christ

“Whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:33 ESV)

Pentecost

Blessed are You, O Christ our God, * Who has shown the fishermen to be all wise, * by sending down to them the Holy Spirit, * and through them You have caught the whole world in Your net. * O Lover of Mankind, glory to You. (Troparion - Tone 8)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

When the Most High descended, confusing tongues, * He divided the nations; * but when He distributed the tongues of fire, * He called all to unity; * and, with one voice, * we glorify the Most Holy Spirit. (Kontakion - Tone 8)

Random Proverb

"My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge." (Proverbs 5:1,2 ESV)

Pray Without Ceasing

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

It is a fearful thing to hate whom God has loved. To look upon another – his weaknesses, his sins, his faults, his defects – is to look upon one who is suffering. He is suffering from negative passions, from the same sinful human corruption from which you yourself suffer. This is very important: do not look upon him with the judgmental eyes of comparison, noting the sins you assume you’d never commit. Rather, see him as a fellow sufferer, a fellow human being who is in need of the very healing of which you are in need. Help him, love him, pray for him, do unto him as you would have him do unto you.

St. Tikhon of Zadonsk
