This year, 1998, is the second year of preparation for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000.  The themes of these years center on the three persons of the Holy Trinity: 1997 - God the Son - in the theme "Converting to Jesus in Holiness"; this year 1998 - God the Holy Spirit - through "Unifying the Church in the Holy Spirit"; and the final year 1999 - God the Father - with the theme "Serving the Father in Justice."

The Holy Spirit is present in the "sanctifying presence within the Community of Christ's disciples," the Church. The Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of the promise and the realization of hope.

The renewed appreciation of the theological virtue of hope and the signs of hope especially during the last part of this century are a joyous part of the Jubilee spirit.  If we look at society in general and the scientific and technological advancements, especially in the areas of medicine, environment, and reconciliation, as well as the progress made in peace and justice with the solidarity among peoples, as we are heartened in spirit.  Add to this the "greater attention to the voice of the Spirit through the acceptance of diversity and a deeper commitment to Christian unity" as seen in increased dialogue with other religions and contemporary culture, as it enhances the visible witness of the Spirit in our daily lives.

The sermons presented during this Pilgrimage 1998 will develop these manifestations in our lives.  They will inspire us to seek that unity in the Spirit that is our hope.

"When the most high descended and confused tongues, He scattered the people; but when He distributed the tongues of fire, he calls all to unity.  Therefore, with one voice, let us praise the most Holy Spirit."
