Blessed Columba Marmion

Blessed Columba Marmion was born in Dublin Ireland in 1858, and ordained originally a priest for the Diocese of Dublin in 1881 after completing his studies in Rome. He was soon to discover the Benedictine community at Maredsous Belgium that was founded in 1872, entering the life there as a monk in 1886. He was known there as a man of prayer, confessor and spiritual director. He also was sent to Louvain to help found a Benedictine house there in 1899. He was elected the third abbot of Maredsous in 1909, and reposed in 1923. He left behind a number of spiritual works that are available in several languages including English.

The diocesan inquiry into his life and cause began in 1957 and was concluded in 1961. On the 3rd of September 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Columba Marmion, with his appointed feast day to be October 3rd.

Dear Father Anthony,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and photos of Belgium. I have been enjoying reading them, and I am sure that everyone else is too..

I must confess that I know precious little about this Blessed soul... But I have noted that there are manifold icons of him that have been created. I am curious if he had some eastern connection that made this especially appropriate? I am pretty sure I have seen at least four to date, including this delightful example.

Anyone?

SS,

I have the material in English that I picked up in Maredsous. If you give me a few days or so I probably could PDF them and send it to you.

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai
