I'm looking for a good book on icons to add to my summer reading list. I'd like a book that explains the meaning behind the various symbols, colors, etc. frequently found in icons.
A book that includes pictures of icons and discussions on them would be good.
Thanks, Jason
P.S. an inexpensive book would be best

Start with Uspensky and Lossky, *The Meaning of Icons*, available (I hope) from SVS seminary bookstore. Christ is Risen! Incognitus

Hi Jason, A good starting place would be to take a look at Iconofile [ iconofile.com] . It's a site dedicated to the art/theology of icons.

Hi Jason,
Uspensky and Lossky, "The Meaning of Icons" is good. Its scope is limited to Russian icons. I believe it costs about $60, maybe more, I borrowed it from my local library through interlibrary loan.
Go to Amazon.com and you will find a lot of books on icons. If you don't want to buy them take the book title, author, publisher, and sometimes the ISBN helps to your local library. If the library doesn't have the book, they can get it for you through interlibrary loan.
God bless you,
Paul

If you don't want to buy them take the book title, author, publisher, and sometimes the ISBN helps to your local library. The ISBN number always helps. Please take the ISBN number (and the title, author, publisher). I can tell you from having worked in a bookstore that it can speed things up, and make it less painful. Don't forget to try local college libraries. Sometimes they let non-students take out memberships and are often better stocked than some public libraries. Used bookstores and yard-sales are great and most especially church rummage sales.

Dear Benedictus, I also heartily recommend Usspensky and Lossky's "The Meaning of Icons".
Another good intro book is "Praying with Icons" by Jim Forest.
The "Educating Icon" by Anton Vrame is an exceptionally wonderful book, not with pictures of icons but looking at their theology and ability to educate the essentials of faith.
"The Icon: Its Meaning and History" by Mahmoud Zibawe and the "Russian Icon" by Lazarev are both good books as well.

Let us also not forget Paul Evdokimov's *The Art of the Icon: A Theology of Beauty*.

I just wanted to thank everyone for offering book suggestions. I ordered The Icon: Window on the Kingdom [ secure.svspress.com] from St. Vlad's Seminary Press and am enjoying it very much. Incidentally, I think the author's take on Western religious art it is very accurate, even if some might find it a bit harsh at times. I might request some of the other books people mentioned by Inter-Library Loan, which is a great resource that too many people seem to overlook. Jason
