I am looking for information on what the Orthodox Chruch believes/teaches in regard to the issue of the roles of wives and husbands in marriage. Particularly commentary on Eph 5:21-33, Col 3:18-20 and 1 Peter 3:1-7.

I'm having a conversation with someone who is an evangelical Christian and I just need sources. But I do not want this to turn into a debate.

Thanks,

Carole

I'm no expert, but I'd suggest as a starting point the text for the Mystery of the Crowning of Marriage. You should be able to find it on the web, but the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston has it in a book form, with a lot of accompanying text for marriage preparation.

Try asking at an Orthodox Church or look up this info on the internet.

I noticed that you live in Tampa, FL. Fr. Stanley Harakas at Christ the Savior Othodox Mission in Brooksville could answer almost any question you might have about any aspect of Orthodox teaching. For a number of years he taught at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary and he is the author of numerous books. Also, he is very kind and gracious. Below is the web address to the Church he serves.
In peace,
Ryan

Thank you, to all who offered information and potential sources!

Pavel,

I did try looking it up on the Internet. I was unable to find something concise (perhaps due to a bad choice of search terms) and I thought that someone here could point me in the right direction, perhaps to a book or other source.

I'm sorry that I bothered you with my request.

Carole,

I have a copy of the Orthodox Study Bible at home. Tonight I will be happy to post their commentary on the those verses. I also have a detailed Orthodox Bible study book but it only has the Gospels.

It was no bother I assure you to advise contacting a local Orthodox Church or to search on the internet. If there had been any bother to me I would not have put finger to the keyboard.

Dear Carole,

My wife is interested in Women in the Orthodox Church and a reader of the St. Ninas Quarterly.

She has suggested contacting Prof. Valerie Karras, a professor of theology and specialist in Greek Patristics and also a prominent Greek Orthodox theologian directly with your question by e-mail: vkarras@smu.edu

Her CV is available here:
http://www.smu.edu/theology/people/karras/karras_Vita.pdf
You can see she has published extensively in this area.

Or you can go to the St. Ninas Quarterly web page and fill out to form with your question:
http://www.stnina.org/contact

or e-mail St. Ninas Quarterly directly at: mcdowemc@bc.edu

You can also do a key word search:
http://www.stnina.org/search/node

Dr. Helen Creticos Theodoropoulos is another specialist in Greek Patristics and you can contact her via St. Ninas Quarterly.
