Dear Menas, It was Pope St Cyroulos VI who restored this monastery and it was he under whose Papacy the apparitions at Zeitoun occurred. What else did he do? Other than be a saint, of course!  Alex

Alexlol It was under his papacy that the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist returned to Egypt, it was under his papacy that the first formal talk took place between the Copts and the Eastern Orthodox... the list goes on - but he was a man of prayer.

Yes, he most certainly was!
I also particularly love St Samaan the Tanner, the sainted "veiled Bishop" and the great blind Coptic Monk - I forget his name.
Where could one buy a large Coptic neck cross, the one made of leather, the Matab?
Also, is the Askeem, the leather scapular worn by Monks and Bishops, only for them and not for laity?

Alex,
Those big leather coptic neck crosses are available at St. Anthony of the Desert Monastery in Newberry Springs, CA. They are accross the highway from our Byzantine Catholic monastery, Holy Resurrection. They also have those really cool coptic blessing crosses you can carry in your shirt pocket.

Alex Dear Alex, you can get those crosses as Athanasius the great said, at that monastery, and probably at some churches. I don't have them at my church or I would have sent one.  Anywho, yes the Eskeem or "Schema" (i think that's what it is in English) is worn only by monks that have reached a very high level of spirituality and rigidity in their spirituality. It has its own rites, prayers, metanoias etc... It's a blessing and a cross (it is a cross-belt! )! Only one wearing the eskeem can put the Eskeem on someone else. Which is why Pope Shenouda put it on Abuna Filipos (God repose his soul in the paradise of joy), so that he in turn could put it on monks. Peace and grace. amen, maranatha!

I forgot to add...do you mean Abouna Andrawes the Samuelite or St. Samuel the confessor when you refer to the blind monk... I am guessing you mean the former, because Catholics and EOs aren't usually a big fan of St. Samuel the confessor. :-)
