Dear patriarch Stephanos,

Give them time!

They are actively looking for a canonical jurisdiction and they do commemorate already Met. Philip Sabiba of the Antiochians, as I understand.

The "Evangelical Catholic" tradition of Lutheranism is destined for union with Catholicism and/or Orthodoxy, to be sure.

Yes, Alex, the Order of Saint Luke!

If I was going to stay Protestant, I'd definitely be Methodist.

What can I say, now that the Anglicans have officially gone insane (except for a few remnant groups, God bless 'em), we Methodists and some of the Lutheran synods are leading the cause for Protestant "close(ish)-to-orthodoxy!" wink

Dear Teen Logo,

Yes indeed!

I've had long conversations with conservative Lutheran priests on how to properly make the Sign of the Cross wink .

And John Wesley himself used the rosary, as you know, and had close ties with Catholics.

I recently received an e-mail from a Lutheran minister sent to Ukraine to convert the people to true Christianity . . .

He attended some Orthodox services (of the autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox) and has now decided to join them.

Yeah, I like the Lutherans, but the name is such a turn-off! wink

It's too bad that down here, most of the Methodist church have been infected with the the "Baptist/Pentecostal" mindset, due to the omnipresence of the latter communities down here. At least down south, one will generally find that the urban Methodist church are more in line with true Methodism.

All my Methodist friends think Catholics are "weird." One of my Methodist friends is disgusted that I attend the Catholic church. "It's just not that good ole Southern Methodist and Baptist tradition!"

Dear Teen Logo,

Interesting points, Big Guy!

There are low and high church traditions in both Lutheranism and Methodism.

John Wesley himself probably wouldn't recognize his followers among many in the United Methodist Church today.

Wesley, as you know, was very much into praying, fasting, reading the Bible and the Fathers, attending Communion regularly etc.

Martin Luther himself told his followers to call themselves "Christians" and not "Lutherans."

We have Methodists up here who receive Communion kneeling and at a rail . . .

My mother lives near "Asbury" parish church - Francis Asbury - now there was a great man of God!

That's how we receive in my Methodist church. I guess I'm out of sync with the Methodist tradition then, because I thought this was normative for Methodist churches. We also have acolytes who are dressed better than Catholic altar boys/girls, a great stone altar, a baptismal font with water from the River Jordan, candles, and twelve enormous tapestries of each Apostle. The vestments of our minister is a flowing black cassock with chasubles, while the vestments of our deacon is a black cassock with a sigma-shaped chasuble-ish thing (color of vestments and altar cloth based on liturgical season). And to top it off, we have a statue of John Wesley.

Not so shabby for a Protestant parish, huh? wink

But, as I said before, many of the rural Methodist churches down here are more "Baptisty."
