In replying to a post in a thread that has now been closed, I wanted to post the number of Scriptural Quotations contained in the Orthodox Catholic Orthos and Divine Liturgy. Some one had once posted it on an Orthodox discussion group and I had saved it. Unfortuantely, when I went in to retrieve it, I couldn't find it. So I posted an inquiry in the various Orthodox Catholc discussion groups I belong to.
Since we still basically serve the Sam Divine Liturgy I thought you all would be interested in this reply I received from an Orthodox priest -

One convert here in Phoenix does a weekly radio show, and in disucssing use
of scripture, took the time to count the number of sciprture verses used /
referenced in Orthros and Divine Litrugy combined on a certain Sunday. He
came up with 455 verses, and this is with the typical 'shorter' version of
the service done in a local Antiochian church.

The annotations of the recension of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for the Ruthenian Eparchy of Passaic gives 194 scriptural references. Since almost all of Orthros consists of various Psalms and Odes which are based upon the Psalms and other Scripture, it would seem to me that 455 is a low figure for Orthros and the Divine Liturgy together.

Dear Bob,

Who da man?

YOU da man!

You da ORTOman!

(I haven't said this for a while, please forgive me).

What has always inspired me about the Orthodox Catholic tradition is that the icon of King David appears in each of the 12 icons of the Great Feasts of the Church to underline the fact that his Psalms are used so widely to celebrate them.

I pray the daily Canons from the Octoechos (don't leave home without them!) and there is nothing but Scriptural references in them.

Alex
