Is he an Orthodox Saint or at least considered venerable? He seems to me like a good canidate for sainthood. Lived a pretty pious life, no extravagances in his court, treated his people fairly, saved his empire on both fronts. Just seems like he has a lot of accomplishments, but I guess the Bulgarian people might object lol since he was called the Bulgar slayer...

Dear GMmcnmbb,
I don't think he'd make that good a candidate...at least from what I know. When he defeated the Bulgarians, he had the eyes taken out of all the one-hundred thousand soldiers, and left every one-hundreth man with one eye to lead them home.
Frankly, I don't think the Bulgarians ever forgave the Greeks. Actually I think in the Balkan wars at the beginning of the past century, Bulgaria sided with the Turks...or so I think.

Bulgaria fought against the Ottomans in the First Balkan War along with Greece and Serbia. It fought against Greece and Serbia however in the Second Balkan War which was instigated over the division of the spoils brought about as a result of the first conflict. Much of this had to do with Macedonia and Bulgarian support for the IMRO/VMRO. Bulgaria did side with Germany and Austo-Hungary during the First World War after a fair amount of vacillating. That by proxy put them on the side of the Turks. I believe their ultimate goal though was to further extend their territorial holdings in Thrace at the expense of the Turks and they were in a race (which they lost) with the Greeks to grab a hold of Salonika when it was evacuated.
Also, Basil II's conquest of the Bulgars was extremely brutal. It seems likely some of the stories surrounding the conflict are somewhat exaggerated though.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for filling me in...I'm so lazy when it comes to looking up things.
As for losing the race with Greece over Solonika, I remember reading that when the Greeks took over the area, they kept insisting that the people were Greeks, and kept telling them to stop speaking Bulgarian.
I have an atlas showing the the different movements of populations. The amount of Bulgarians moving into what is now Bulgaria after the First World War, seems to have been the largest population move of the last century.
