Under the different rites and or churches, can a Roman Catholic recieve any sacrements (Penance, Communion for example) when attending a rite. I travel and would also like to attend Mass at "Eastern" rite churches. I certainly do not wish to offend, but would like to know. My own local asst pastor would certainly know this answer as he is a scholar with some knowledge in this area.

I guess my real question is: Are we not one church?

You may receive any sacrament in any Eastern Catholic Church. Latin and Byzantine Catholics are in full communion with one another and with Rome.

Hi, Fritz!

Welcome to The Byzantine Forum. Any Catholic can partake of the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Holy Anointing in any other Catholic Church. It is possible to receive the other Sacraments in a Catholic Church that one is not enrolled in. A Roman Catholic could, for example, be married in a Byzantine Catholic parish so long as the appropriate regulations are followed. The regulations are for the good housekeeping of the Church and are meant to serve and should never be understood as barriers. It is possible for a Roman Catholic man to be ordained to the priesthood in the Byzantine Catholic Church. But if he wishes to serve as a Byzantine Catholic priest he should make a formal transfer to the Byzantine Catholic Church. Likewise, if a young Maronite Catholic family chooses to worship in a Roman Catholic Church and baptize their children there it only makes sense that they change their membership to the Church they plan to live in. Its kind of like being born in Pennsylvania and then going to Colorado. If youre just visiting you dont enjoy all the benefits available to those who live there and are registered residents of that state. But if you move from Pennsylvania to Colorado and plan to live there you should change your registration and tax withholdings. The Church has such rules only to help preserve and foster the unique character and life of all of the different suri iuris Catholic Churches.
