I wonder if the inside will look like a Catholic Church? Reminds me of the idea for Robert Shullers church. confused Unity, how about Tradition/tradition?
~~~~~~
In "Six Memos for the Next Millennium," Italo Calvino wrote of "the search for lightness as a reaction to the weight of living." His focus was on literature, but that search pertains to religion as well. And if the Christ the Light Cathedral that is to open in early 2008 fulfills the promise of the current plans, the result should be inspirational.
Maybe it does look like Schuller's "chrystal cathedal" but from the picture it looks like a nuclear power plant or something? Wonder what the inside will look like?
That is what I was thinking too. Glad someone else see it. At least Shullers church, from what I have seen of it in passing on tv has some resemblence of beauty about it, in my opinion anyway.
I love modern architecture cool ! I think churches with vaulted ceilings & lots of windows are much more uplifting than the dark & dreary Medieval churches. However, I think modern Catholic churches in this country could benefit from the use of icons. By the way, the trend is toward modern architecture in new European churches also.
I think it looks like a holdover from Logan's Run!
When will the West recognize that temples should follow a divine pattern laid out since the time of Moses? Church architecture should be familiar to us - not make us go "What the h... - is that a football stadium?"
To me, it's all about getting noticed or receiving some blasted architectural award these days. Revelation should be our guide, not Architectural (in)Digest.
No amount of icons can save that monstrosity. As far as I'm concerned, they should turn it into a theater and build a humble little wooden church next door to it. That would be a statement!
My two cents...
I don't see how it could top the "taj Mahony" for ugliness. We truly live in an impoverished age.
Architecture aside,
The REAL SCARY part is THE COST
$131,000,000... that is a lot of money. A lot of money. Let me repeat that, A LOT OF MONEY.
Think about how they could build a less "lavish" complex and the good works they could do with the money saved?
Oh well, I didn't know Christianity was about spending 131 million dollars to build a building.
I personally think the diocese is designing it so that it can be used in the SETI project.
131 million for that?!
I can think of better things that the money could be used for.
Think of it like the pyramids of Egypt. These horribly expensive structures are monuments to the bishops who build them. I hope those bishops have better luck with resurrection than the pyramid builders. wink
I think it is Ugly As Sin! [aquinasandmore.com]
This is more evidence of an iconoclasts and cult of ugliness [ad2000.com.au] which plagues the Catholic Church today.
Dear Ray,
From what I see, it does look ugly. Now architects can create modern churches, or rather new style churches that can be beautiful. I'm thinking of the Gr. Orth. Church in Milwaukee designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
It's funny that Wright had a poured cement dome in that climate. It costs them a fortune to have it repaired each year. It is though a beautiful church, especially considering the era it was built in. I believe it was the 1960's.
The icons were unusual, and the latest priest had them removed and replaced with more traditional one's. Frankly they don't go. Also the churches dome was to rotate during the liturgy. Each motor would have cost almost a half a million, so they were never put in.
Well Frank Lloyd Wrigt died, and I don't know if he ever saw the finished product. The firm though makes sure that nothing is done to alter the original plans.
I was a member of the Diocese of Oakland until I changed rites back in March. The new nuclear power plant, I mean, "cathedral," is the least of the problems within that diocese.
"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"--Darth Vader, Star Wars Episode III
Looking at this new Cathedral I may as well be standing on the bridge of a Star Destroyer watching them build the Death Star. Why couldnt they build the beautiful Church seen on the dellachiesa website?
