Dear Friends, I don't mean to enter into debate with Cardinal Ratzinger here . . . But if His Holiness ever needs assistance in smoothing out Eastern theological sensibilities, there are plenty of threads here that could be used for that purpose! I think we've already reunited the East with the West a few times here . . . Perhaps the Administrator would like to e-mail His Holiness on all our behalf in this respect? German, Latin and Italian speakers will probably be needed! Alex

Alex, you raise a very good point to be skeptical between what people say and what actually happens. But Pope Benedict's quote is excellent and a real depature, I believe, from Pope John Paul's position on the issue of papal supremacy. Personally, I thought that unity was impossible and I never cared for it. If it happens, I would never refer to myself as Catholic with a capital C (no offense to anyone, just out of habit I have always been Orthodox). However, the elements are there with Pope Benedict, the Patriarch who needs an ally in Rome, and perhaps a new attitude from Russia. The Turks would have to supportive of this because they can't do anything to get anyone in the EU mad at them. Also, with Islam and secularism posing a very real threat, maybe this is the time for a unity that the Orthodox and Catholics can live with.

I'm new here so if I'm speaking out of turn let me know, please. I have been a Roman Catholic all my life: 66 years. Lately I have been fortunate to have obtained a copy of the Philokalia and The Way of the ilgrim. I think my chruch would profit GREATLY if we joined forces. Most Roman Catholics aren't aware of the spirituality available in the Orthodox religions. Mike

Mike,
Welcome to our community; you'll find a few other Carmelites among our ranks. Far from speaking out of turn, your words are (at least to my ears) a welcome addition.
Many years,
Neil

DEar jporthodox,
Your sociological analysis of the ecumenical situation is "right on" and these quite secular forces are truly converging on the unity movement.
As you know, the East, prior to the schism of 1054, supported a strong papacy in the West to act as referee between the Ec. Patriarch and the Byzantine Emperor.
A good referee is always needed!

Dear Mike,
I'm one who follows Carmelite spirituality as much as possible and love the Carmelite Scapular!
I've also written an Akathist to Our Lady of Mt Carmel that is on this site.
I forget the address . . .

The Brown Scapular has many fans. Which of the carmelite writers do you like the most? Have you read any of the Philokalia? Mike mlopiccolo@neo.rr.com

I forget the address . . . Alex, The web address is https://www.byzcath.org/~alex/ . Unfortunately, the link appears to be broken; perhaps we can prevail on our Admin to fix the break Many years, Neil
