. Anyhoo, how did the Poles justify their interevention between Rome and Eastern Catholics (like appointing their bishops)?

This is one of the great myths of the modern mind. To the ultramontane Roman Catholics I must remind you that papal appointment of bishops (outside of Italy) is a very recent practice. To the Orthodox and to Counciliar Catholics, I must remind you that it was because of great abuses that the Holy See assumed this role.

Our Ruthenian bishops were once appointed by a Hungarian Count of the Unitarian Church. The holy See assumed the role formerly exercised by him.

I write this in support of my consistent view that a wide open but civil discussion could take place as to the pastorally best method for episcopal selection in the 21st century, but those who scream "the canons, the canons, say ..." are full of horse hockey.

Sorry, Anastasios, about the lawyer thing. There are, I am sure, lots of them who are good and generous people. Unfortunately, I live in "lawyer central", i.e., Metro Washington DC and you can't sneeze without a least a dozen of them around you. And most of my encounters with them have been of the unpleasant variety.

There is a Washington joke: Terrorists have rounded up 10,000 lawyers in a building; and they threaten to release them 10 every hour unless their demands are met.

I hope Michaela has the stamina to lug all those heavy tomes around. They're HUGE (and expensive!).

Blessings!

Dear Friends,

A Lawyer's Joke for Today:

God received into heaven an engineer who somehow dropped out of sight and turned up in hell.

The devil reported to God that hell now had running water, excellent plumbing, bridges etc.

God said, "But that engineer was assigned to heaven. Give him back!"

The devil refused.

God then said, "If you don't give him back, I'll sue!"

To which the devil replied, "Yeah, right - and just where are YOU going to find a lawyer?"

Alex
