A Niall, a chara dhil, Well . . . you inspire me. About 20 years ago some Ruthenian intellectual wrote a book called "Our People". I've been thinking of writing a response to the book. My response will be entitled "Them Ones", and published in Letterkenny.

Another website to check out about the Melkites is www.mliles.com/melkite/. [ mliles.com] Its not an "official" site, but it does provide a wealth of information. Terry

Even though I've been scarce here these past couple of weeks, I try to check at least daily (have to, if I want to keep up my rep for posting almost any website that anyone ever dreamed they might want - no matter how strange).
Many years,
Neil Dear Neil: RE: FAST OF THE THEOTOKOS The Melkites used to have a brochure on fasting, do you know if it is still online? Lovingly yours in Christ, Elizabeth Maria

Elizabeth, I'm not certain if its the one you're to which you're referring, but there is an article that Father Philaret Littlefield wrote a few years ago for Sophia, titled Abouna, Why Do We Fast? [ melkite.org] . Father Philaret also has two other writings on the topic, which he originally prepared for Saint George's in Milwaukee: Fast & Abstinence, Reasons Why [melkite.org] and Rule for Fasting & Abstinence [melkite.org] . I'm sure that there's crossover between the first and the two latter pieces, but I haven't ever compared them closely.
Father Joe Francavilla from Holy Transfiguration has an excellent piece on his parish website titled Fasting [ holytransfiguration.org] . Martha Liles also has a section on her website (the one Terry linked above) specifically devoted to the Dormition Fast [mliles.com] . Many years, Neil

He is a wonderful priest. He used to come out to visit Los Angeles so we would hear his delightful sermons. Did you come out to the Parish Life conference at St. Anne's in 1993? I was there.

I've known Father Joe for about half a lifetime though, back to his days as the assistant at the Cathedral. He is indeed an excellent homilist and a wonderful priest, besides being a genuinely delightful person. Father has several fans on the forum, both parishioners of Holy Transfiguration and folks who have encountered him in visiting Holy Transfiguration for Liturgy. Many years, Neil
