Shlomo David, Here is the offical response from Chor-bishop Gregory on our offical website.
POPE JOHN PAUL II APPOINTS RECTOR OF ST. RAYMOND MARONITE CATHEDRAL BISHOP OF THE EPARCHY OF SAINT MARON OF BROOKLYN
St. Louis--Pope John Paul II has announced this morning at 6 a.m. CST (noon in Rome) that Chorbishop Gregory J. Mansour, Vicar General and Chancellor of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon, and Rector of St. Raymond Maronite Cathedral in St. Louis has been appointed the third Bishop of the Eparchy of St. Maron of Brooklyn, following Bishop Stephen Hector Doueihi. The announcement was made simultaneously in Rome, Lebanon and Brooklyn at noon Rome time. A press conference will be held at 10:00a.m. Sat. January 10, 2004 at St. Raymond Cathedral.
The appointment is a result of the nomination of Bishop-elect Gregory J. Mansour by the Maronite Patriarch Mar Nasrallah Peter Cardinal Sfeir and the Synod of Maronite Bishops in Bkerke, Lebanon.
Bishop-elect Gregory J. Mansour will be ordained March 2, 2004, the Feast of St. John Maron, at the Patriarchal Headquarters of the Maronite Church in Bkerke, Lebanon by his Eminence and Beatitude Mar Nasrallah Peter Cardinal Sfeir. A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP-ELECT TO THE EPARCHY
January 10, 2004
Dear Bishop Shaheen, brother priests, deacons/subdeacons, religious men and women, and faithful laity of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon,
With a deep sense of gratitude, and yet a certain sense of loss, I pen these few lines to you. By now you know that I have been appointed to serve as Bishop for the Eparchy of St Maron of Brooklyn. Our Holy Father, along with our Patriarch and his Synod of Bishops have humbled me in this appointment, and have placed on my shoulders a responsibility that goes back to apostolic times.
I follow two great Bishops, Archbishop Francis M. Zayek, founder and first Bishop of St Maron, and Bishop Stephen Hector Doueihi, both of whom have made unparalleled contributions to the Maronite Church. I pray that I may make a humble yet generous contribution to theirs, and to those who have gone before them.
Before I leave the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon, which I have loved so much - her bishops, priests, religious and laity - I want to say a word of thanks to all of you who have touched my life in a beautiful way. I look forward to renewing our common efforts for the good of our Church. A special word of thanks to Bishop John Chedid who trusted me from the beginning to work by his side, and to Bishop Robert Shaheen who also called me to his side and trusted me with the work of the Eparchy and the parish of St Raymond.
In the past few months so many in the Eparchy have been true brothers and sisters to me, especially you the priests. I know the hidden sacrifices you routinely make, and the unsung yet heroic witness to Christ you bear, and I am proud to be part of your service to the Church. I am eternally grateful, may God repay you.
I wish to specifically mention my gratitude to Bishop Shaheen, who has truly been my older brother in Christ, and has helped me in countless ways, more than I can say. I look forward to continue an especially fruitful collaboration with him for the good of the entire Church, a collaboration tested and true, forged by experience here in St Louis.
I want to also thank Fr Andre Mhanna, who has stepped in to assume many pastoral and administrative roles to assist and support me, and who does very well in whatever is entrusted to him.
Until I assume my new responsibilities I will continue to be available to you in the capacities that Bishop Shaheen has entrusted to me. I can repay you for your many kindnesses, and for the privilege of serving Christ along side of you, only by my gratitude and my prayer.
I look forward to a bright future with Bishop Shaheen and the Eparchy of Our Lady so that both Eparchies here in the United States, led by their priests and bishops, may fulfill the Synod's call, and Bishop Shaheen's repeated vision, that we are one Maronite Church worldwide.
Be assured of my prayer, and I ask for yours, as I prepare for this new calling placed upon me. I am so grateful for each of you, thank you.
Yours in Christ,
Chorbishop Gregory J. Mansour
Rector -------------------------------------------------- The true glory of Saint Raymond: The Little Flock that gave America two True Shepherds.
When rumors went out trying to guess who the next bishop of the Eparchy (Diocese) of Saint Maron Brooklyn is going to be, after Bishop Stephen Hector Doueihi, the second Bishop of that Diocese, resigned as he reached the canonical age (75), according to the Canon Law of the Eastern Churches, many people found it strange that the Patriarch in Lebanon would name another, or a second Maronite American-born Bishop. Moreover due to his young age Chorbishop Gregory Mansour was really out of the picture for such a nomination.
Now things have happened. Although almost everybody was caught off guard with the nomination, Bishop Shaheen had a deep inspiration that Abouna Gregory one day is going to be a Bishop. As the famous saying exclaims: watch for what you wish for! Sayedna Bob got his wishWe all got our wish and Abouna Gregory who definitely enjoyed being Rector at Saint Raymond didnt know that he was dealing with a LOOK LIKE BISHOP AND BE_PARISH, not at least when we woke him up two weeks ago and told him: The Patriarch is on the phone!
I personally dont know whether or not I should be happy that my second Pastor in a row has become Bishop. The reason for that is because I love both of them: One remained here with us before and after, and now, the other one will remain for ever in my heart and Im sure in yours too a living example of a humble and caring Christ for ever.
Today our joy is complete: the true glory of Saint Raymond is that the little flock, which at one time dwelled in a four-family flat, and made it into a church, now gave this great country of the United States two true shepherds. It is our destiny at Saint Raymond to share the love of God we experience in our shepherds with the entire Maronite Church not only in America but in the world.
God is telling us something... : You have been given the Kingdom of God. Be fruitful and yield a rich harvest You who were found faithful with small matters, now I place you in charge of great. All for the unity of the Maronite Church, and the upbuilding of Beit Maroon. So let us rejoice and in one voice praise God for His wondrous work in this New year, and in His Bishop-Elect.
Abouna Andre Mhanna Associate Rector. January 10th, 2004

God grant many years to His servant, Bishop-Elect Gregory. Axios.
And God grant many years of happy and healthy retirement to His servant, Bishop Stephen.
