David,

Don't worry. After a couple of years at an Orthodox seminary I'm sure you'll be exclusive with the best of them.

Maybe the Orthodox Church as a whole doesn't need the Western Rite, but a lot of people.

If you make a web search you'll find dozens of uncannonical groups, most of them without any credibility, with "western rite", "anglican rite" and all that stuff.

The Antiochian Church did a wonderful job, with lots of souls who wanted to be orthodox.

Nah,

Fr. Michael would wipe the seminary halls with me.

Seriously. I think, for all of it's flaws, one thing the WR is good at is fostering tolerance and understanding.

It seems from what I've noticed here that Eastern Catholics have the same experience. A window into both, as it were.

There is the other danger, however.

It is difficult to keep one foot in each camp. It would be easier to be WR, i.e. to be a minority within a minority, if I believed that I had no choice but be Orthodox because the Roman alternative is illegitimate. I don't want to do this. But refusing to do this and yet trying to remain true to some amorphous western heritage leaves me wondering..."Why am I not Roman Catholic?" Especially when I visit a Cathedral or a really vibrant parish with a couple of thousand people who are obviously and genuinely worshiping in a Novus Ordo mass. Why am I not in communion with these people?

It's hard to make sense of it. I gather that many of the people here do so because they have historical and family ties to Eastern Catholicism.
Is that what makes the difference?

Do any of you Eastern Catholics feel the same kind of dissonance that I'm feeling? Wondering why you're not in communion with the rest of your Eastern Brethren?

I mean, I know we all want the schism healed. That's not what I'm asking. Maybe I just like to hear myself type.

DL
