Hi friends. Which one is correct:
1. Eshoo, Yeshua, Yehoshua, the Aramaic word for Jesus?
2. Alaha, Aloho, Elaha, the Aramaic word for God?
There's a big aramaic and red cross logo in www.peshitta.org. [peshitta.org.] Can somebody tell me how to read it and what's the meaning of it?

Thanx...

Simeon,

I am presuming that you want the Aramaic translations into America English.

Yeshua is Jesus.

For the others I can't help you.

Christ is our peace.

Paul

"Yehoshua" means "Joshua" which means "God saves" or "God as Saviour". It may also mean "Jesus" since I think Joshua and Jesus may come from a common root???

I don't know, though, if this is Aramaic....I believe Yehoshua is Hebrew

Let us pray for Unity In Christ!

I believe Joshua and Jesus are basically the same name. In the KJV, Hebrews 4:8 translates the name Jesus when it was Joshua who was being referred to.

According to John McKenzie, SJ, Joshua comes from the Hebrew, Yehosua. Yehosua became Yeshua in a later form of Hebrew and also in Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke.

Thanx for those good answers, friends.
Perhaps somebody from Syrian Church, or Maronite can contribute some answers? I've read that they're using Aramaic.

Shlomo (Peace to you in Syriac)Simeon,

I am a Maronite so I can help you out.

1. Yeshua is the traditional Syriac version of Our Lord's name.

2. Aloho is Syriac and Alaha is Assyrian/Chaldean. What many people forget is that Semitic Languages do not have vowels. Therefore, you have to look to the root which would be A-L-H.

Aramaic is read from right to left, and members of the Maronite Church still teach it.

Poosh BaShlomo (Stay in Peace),
Yuhannon

Simeon:

According to Paul Younan, the Administrator of the Peshitta site,

Quote
It reads "Yah". This shorter form of "Yahweh" occurs twice in Exodus (15:2 and 17:15) and is a symbol used in the Church of the East on sacred manuscripts.
