I know you good and wise Byzantines can help me out here. After I posted to this forum for the first time this morning, I returned to the home page of this forum to find to my surprise that the daily reading was my "namesake" scripture, Mark 5:41 cf. While it was a beautiful confirmation to me that it was time for me to stop lurking and start participating, I definitely remember that we covered this reading a few months ago at a Saturday daily Liturgy. I thought, well, maybe, it is such a lovely and important scripture we go over it a few times a year. Or something. Since I am relatively new to all of this Byzantine stuff, I figure anything can happen. So I figured if I am going to be Byzantine, I need to get on the same proverbial page. I know that the Byzantine lectionary is not the same as the Roman rite lectionary (right???) but I have had a heck of a time finding the Byzantine daily scripture readings online. I was able to download the Menologian software (on my old PC, after kicking it a few times) (my Mac is jealous that there's not Menologian software for it) and opened up today's Scripture readings. New Calendar: Matthew 21:12-14, 17-20 Old Calendar: Matthew 17:1 - 9 Today is August 19, isn't it? Please correct me where I need to be corrected. And anywhere else you see fit. Peace, Talitha

Welcome Talitha and ByzGirl, I hope both of you find the Forum to be a helpful place. The Byzantine Catholic Daily Prayer and Lectionary [catholic-forum.com] to which ByzGirl posted a link should provide much useful material. It's a wonderful resource and is the creation of Dave Brown, one of our own, who posts as DTBrown. Many years, Neil

Matthew 21:12-14, 17-20 is the appointed reading for the Ninth Friday after Pentecost. Most Byzantine Catholics in America use the Western (Gregorian) date for Pascha (Easter). This year Pascha fell on March 27th, Pentecost on May 15th, making this the Fourteenth Week after Pentecost. Some Byzantine Catholics and almost all Orthodox use the Julian Calendar date for Pascha, which was May 1st. That meant that Pentecost fell on June 19th and that yesterday (August 19th) was Friday of the Ninth Week after Pentecost.
Matthew 17:19 is the appointed Gospel for the Feast of the Holy Transfiguration, which is appointed for August 6th. Since the Julian Calendar is currently running 13 days late August 6th on the Julian Calendar falls on August 19th of the Gregorian Calendar.

Thank you for all of your wonderful help and advice. Unfortunately, none of it answers why the gospel reading on the site on Friday was Mark 5:41 cf. Perhaps something for my eyes only? But then Pani Rose referenced also on this post: https://www.byzcath.org/bboard/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=002138;p=1#000000 Must be one of those Mysteries I keep hearing so much about.

The verse from Mark 5:41 was part of the excerpt from the appointed reading for Friday of the Fourteenth Week after Pentecost. It was posted at the top of the Forum from Friday morning, August 19th, to Saturday morning.
"And when [Jesus] had entered, he said to them, Why do you make a tumult and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. Taking her by the hand he said to her, "Talitha cumi"; which means, Little girl, I say to you, arise. And immediately the girl got up and walked (she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. (Mark 5:39, 40a, 41, 42 Fourteenth Friday after Pentecost)
Pascha (on the Gregorian calendar) was on Sunday, March 27th. Pentecost (count 50 days) was on Sunday, May 15th. Count 14 Fridays and you have it!
