Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory to Him Forever!

Is Jeremiah 15:1, seen as proof for the doctrine of the communion of saints, in the Orthodox Church?

Also, I read in the English translation of the Septuagint, by Sir Lancelot C.L. Brenton,
that Jeremiah 15:1 reads, "And the Lord said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before My face, My soul could not be toward them: dismiss this people, and let them go forth." However my Douay-Rheims Haydock Catholic commentary says that the this verse doesn't read as "though Moses....stood" in the Greek. Can anyone clear this up for me? What does the original Greek and Hebrew say on this verse? Thanks. smile

Dear Theosis,

Introductory note: Jews call God HaShem which means "the Name." They use it in the same way English Bibles translate YHWH to LORD. YHWH Elohim is "the Lord God" also HaShem Elohim is "the LORD God."

I asked a Jewish friend of mine about the Hebrew on Jer 15:1 and he wrote:

Quote
Drashi writes The Masoretic text is the closest to a good translation.

Literally, it reads (translating each word as it appears):

"And-He-then-said, HaShem, unto-me, if/or/though/in-case stood, Moses and-Samuel, before Me, nothing My-soul/spirit/feeling/considerations, is-not-of-the-people, this-one, send/dispatch, from-over/upon My-countenance and leave."

Or, in more understandable language:

"And HaShem said to me, 'Even though [my beloved prophets] Moses and Samuel stood before Me, it is nothing. I have no considerations about this people, so send them away from My presence and leave.'"

I hope this helps.
Peace and God bless,

BradM
