Dear Rose,

Thank you for sharing all that!

I believe that prayer is ultimately not to say how much we love God, but is an experience of how much God loves us.

I was recently hit by a very severe temptation that I knew would lead to all sorts of bad things.

I could only say, "Lord, you'll have to conquer this because I can't."

And once we cast our cares on the Lord, well, He really does come to our defence.

Alex, stay away from those Delilah and Salome "worldly" women!

So Delilah said to Alex, uhh... Samson, "Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued." (Judges 16:6)

They are nothing but trouble... wink

Dear Brad,

Today is also the feast of St Samson in the Ethiopian Church!

Have you had a chance to see the Akathist service to King David?

p.s. thanks for the advice re: women! Where were you when I needed you back in university? wink

I think it's not all about experiencing God's love for us but us telling him about our problems and kinda askin him for kinds of help that weneed askin 4 help that others need. But, experiencing God's love is big part of it but so is that. But I think it's ultimately talking to God like carrying on a conversation with another person but in a more solemn and worshipful way.Thats what I believe.

I agree Max. I get tickled when people are afaid to talk to God like He is standing right there with us. After all He knows our thoughts and words before we even say them. I think it was St. John Chrysostom that said (and I am sure someone will correct me if I have the wrong Father) that seconds before we have even asked forgiveness, God has already done so, because He looks on the heart.

Rose,
That is the normal way that I pray - I talk to God the way I talk to anyone else, except in my heart/head instead of out loud. Where does this fit in the overall scheme of prayer? Is this meditative, contemplative, vocal, etc? My husband thinks it is contemplative, but I get the impression from both the reading I've been doing and from my spiritual director that the way I pray is one of the lower levels of prayer. Maybe I just didn't explain how I pray well enough to my spiritual director? Anyway, when I try to pray the way my spiritual director said is meditative prayer, it just isn't as fulfilling as the way I normally pray. If the way I pray is a lower level of prayer, I do want to grow and reach the higher levels. Should I keep plugging away at meditative prayer, or stick with what's been working for me? confused
