Does anyone know where in the NT it is stated that one should not take communion unworthily? I know that I have read it before, but I cannot seem to find it right now! Or, perhaps my mind is failing me and I did not read it in the NT..... Thanks for the help! In His Name, Stephen

Dear Stephen, I Corinthians 11:27-29. Hopefully, I'm not deluded about THAT! Alex

1 Corinthians 11:20-32: When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. It would be good to read the entire epistle to get the whole context. (Sorry for the NIV translation, it's the easiest available to me to copy and paste).

Man, Alex beat me! I thought I could get it posted before him, but of course I am unworthy to post before the master.

Another relevant passage is Matthew 5:23-24. It's not specifically about communion, but it does address having right relationships in the community as essential to proper worship: "If, when you are bringing your gift to the altar, you suddenly remember that your brother has a grievance against you, leave your gift where it is before the altar. First go and make your peace with your brother, and only then come back and offer your gift." BTW, the Biblical Institute of Los Angeles [ unbound.biola.edu] has an excellent online concordance for finding specific passages. Of course, it's only for the Protestant Bible, but it's still quite useful. -- Penthaetria

Dear Francis,
I gave the Reader's Digest version . . .
If I thought I were a "master" of any kind, that truly WOULD be a delusion on my part!
God bless,
Alex

Thank you so much to everyone that replyed to me! I have been looking for that passage for a while and it was kind of irking me that I could not find it! I will definatly have to read the entire chapter tonight(at least) so as to keep it in context as was suggested earlier! In His Name, Stephen
