Dear In Christ,
1) When will Bp. Basil be installed as Metropolitan?
2) When will Fr. John K. be consecrated?

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever! I have received an early update to the schedule. The elevation of Bishop Basil to Metropolitan of the Byzantine Catholic Ruthenian Church will be Tuesday, July 9, in Pittsburgh. The ordination of Archpriest John to Bishop of Parma will be Wednesday, July 10, in Parma. Details will come from the respective chanceries. May God grant our eparchs many years, in peace, health and happiness. Fr Deacon El

Happy Birthday to me! July 9th is my birthday and I couldn't have asked for a better present.

Likely at the respective cathedrals, neither of which is large. To be honest, unless you are Somebody, don't expect to get nearer than an adjoining space, watching on closed circuit TV.

Lance,
If Metropolitan Basil is enthroned in July, does that pose a problem? I was under the impression that all new Metropolitans were supposed to report to the Pope this June in order to receive their palliums. If our Metropolitan isn't installed by then, how will he receive the pallium in June?

Anthony,
It is my guess he will go to Rome in June for the Feast of St. Peter and Paul and receive his pallium meaning technically he will have received his right to exercise his metropolitan privleges before being formally enthroned. The way it works actually is that upon notification of being raised to metropolitan, a bishop has three months to petition the Pope for the pallium. If he doesn't his nomination becomes invalid. If he does, I am going to assume he can exercise his privleges even if hasn't physically received his pallium. If that assumption is wrong then the metropolitan would have to wait till he received the pallium before he could convoke the Council of Hierarchs or conduct visitations of other Eparchies. Another alternative is that the Pope could send the pallium with his representative although that is pretty rare.

Anastasios and Sharon,
The Metropolitan will almost certainly be installed in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. If the dates are correct it looks like Bishop-elect John will be ordained there as well. I can't possibly conceive they will fly all the various hierarchs to Pittsburgh for Jul 9 and then to Cleveland the next day. Sorry, Parma folks but logistically that is madness.

Sharon,
Do *I* know anyone?! Didn't you know that Bishop Basil is my 12th cousin? My last name was originally Hudsevich, not Hudson! Darn those Ellis Island name changers! ;-)
Just kidding!

Lance,
It's an easy drive, but I see your point. Kinda stinks - I think it's a nice touch when a bishop can be made bishop in the Cathedral which he will call home - both for himself and his people.
As for the pallium thing - my brain is on strike right now, but wasn't there something other than the pallium which a recant (last couple o' decades) Eastern hierarch accepted instead of the pallium?

Sharon,
All Eastern bishops wear the omophorion, which was copied(?) in the West when the pallium was designed. What the significance of an Eastern Catholic hierarch receiving a pallium is difficult for me to comprehend. Does it add anything to the office of Metropolitan that the Metropolitan doesn't already have with his omophorion? Someone please explain this. Do Orthodox bishops receive palliums?
The Catholic Encyclopedia considers the pallium a sign of the Metropolitan's obedience to the Pope. Is this different than what the omophorion conveys? What is the significance of a Metroplitan's omophorion as it relates to his status as head of a 'sui juris' church? Please clarify. This is an interesting topic. I apologize if it departs from the thread's topic, but I never saw our bishops wearing palliums.
Is there an Eastern liturgical service for the bestowing of the pallium? I would like to have a copy of it for my Byzantine Traditions chant library.
Joe

If I remember correctly, our late Metropolitan Judson did not receive his palium on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul either. He received it at a later date.
Does anyone else have this memory?
I'm so glad I'm going to be in Pittsburgh for an ikon-writing retreat that week. I guess I'll give up one morning and see if I can get into the Cathedral.

Medved,
Metropolitan Judson received his pallium the day after in private ceremony instead of the Papal Mass because the Ecumenical Patriarch said he would boycott the Mass if a Byzantine metropolitan received the pallium at it.

In Christ, Lance That was a wild day in Rome, a priest friend I know who was there at the time tells me. I don't blame the EP for that move, though. anastasios
