I'm looking for a good translation of the Psalter based on the Septuagint (a separate psalter--I have lots of Bibles containing the book of psalms).
I'd like something that has a good feel to it and (preferably) uses slightly archaic language (a few thees and thous).
If you are recommending a translation, could you post a few verses from a psalm (maybe Psalm 50) if possible?
Thanks, Jason

Dear Jason, Well, if the KJV was good enough for St Paul . . . The Grail Psalter is highly recommended and the Administrator here recommends it - a beautiful translation to be sure. I know two monastics who have committed it to memory! Here it is online: http://www.angelfire.com/il/psalter Alex

Jason:
I ordered the new OCA Archdiocese of Canada Psalter recently. I can't quote from it, since it hasn't arrived yet. I don't think it has any archaic language, but Diak recommends it highly and says the language is "chantable and respectful..."

Charles,
Where did you order it from? Is there a website or phone number?
Thanks, Jason

Jason,
The company is: The WORDsmith P.O. Box 424 Westport, ON K0G 1X0 Canada
You can call at (613) 273-3222. They are really nice people. I ordered 2 Psalters for myself and a friend. It came to around $45 Canadian for both with shipping and handling. I think if you divided that in half, and figured around 70% or so, you would roughly have the U.S. amount.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
The OCA Psalter printed by WordSmith is wonderful and I heartily recommend it. It has all of the penetential troparia for each kathisma, the nine bilbical odes, the service of the 12 Psalms from the Pecherska Lavra, the verses for the various magnifications (velichannya), etc.
It is a less formal English translation than that of the Psalter of the 70 from Holy Transfiguration Monastery, but in my humble opinion it is the finest English translation Psalter available, myself having used most of the available English translations of the Septuagint liturgically.
There is also the New Skete translation which is on-line but of which I am much less fond.

Thanks Diak! I think I might buy the OCA Psalter you suggest. I have seen the HTM Psalter online, and I like that one too. Maybe I'll get both... but maybe I don't need two psalters.
Thanks, Jason

The Psalter from the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Brookline is splendid. They are a schismatic group in Eastern Orthodox (HOCNA) but some of their publishing is beautiful. Magdaleni

I really love the Abbey Psalter. It's beautifully done, big enough to chant from (even with By-golly-I'm-trying-to-focals) and you can get it from Amazon for under thirty bucks.
Cheers,
Sharon

I was using "Amazon" simply as an example of a mainstream bookstore - i.e you can get it practically anywhere.
OK?
