WHATS YOUR IDEA OF SPRING BREAK Sandy beaches? We have the Mon, the Ohio and the Allegheny. Exotic cuisine? Well be featuring the traditional Lenten diet of the Byzantine Church. Celebrations? Well be gathering for Vespers, Matins, Compline and Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. New Experiences? Youre welcome to sit in on our theology classes, have some quiet time for prayer and meditation in our chapel. Cool People? Meet the men who will be your priests someday.
Byzantine Catholic men in college are warmly invited to consider spending a little unstructured time at the Seminary over spring break. Participate in as little or as much of our life as you wish, chill out, explore Pittsburgh, explore your own faith, talk to some interesting people who are committed to that faith. There is no charge, there will be no hype, no sales pitch and no attitude.
For more information, contact Fr. Jack Custer at Jackcus@aol.com or 412-321-8383.

You know when our youngest son was little, Fr. Andrew would take the alter servers on a trip every summer. They would go to a ball game, and dinner, the incline, something special each time. But the favorite part for the boys was the trip to the seminary. It may have only been for a short while, but it made an impact. Our oldest son loved being back there for his dads ordination to the diaconate. He recounted the fun times of bowling especially. :p But it was very special for him to be at the seminary.

wooooooooo! yah!, SPRING BREAK 2004!!!
no, really though, it sounds like a very good idea.
They should make videos called "Seminarians Gone Wild", they can show seminarians "going wild" by singing greek chant and ummm, wait this is probably a really bad idea. Scrap the whole video thing.
The Eparchy of Toronto runs a March Break camp called "Break for Jesus"- though it is more amiably known as "God Camp". It has been going strong now for several years and for the most part is excellent (my only real beef is the non-lenten menu the continue to choose). But otherwise, it is a great idea. Best of luck at spring break.

Ilya and Pani Rose: Thanks for the positive comments.
And you're right, I think we'll keep the video cameras off.

Holy Fr. Bless me a sinner,
Fr. Custer,
This is Deacon Stans wife. Someone just asked me how much seminary costs a year. He would be a late vocation, I have talked with him in a very conservative chat room for about a year now. Told him I would check.

For candidates for Holy Orders, room and board runs a bit under $8000. a year and yearly tuition is likewise just under $8000. Seminarians pursuing the MA in Theology in collaboration with Duquesne University will spend another $3,500. As you can see, priestly formation is an expensive proposition. Each of the Eparchies makes its own arrangements; every Eparchy assists its candidates financially to one degree or another. Tuition room and board fees come nowhere close to covering what formation actually costs per person---neither at Ss Cyril and Methodius nor in any other seminary with which I am familiar.
Students who are not candidates for Holy Orders do not reside at the Seminary. They may obtain an MA degree in Theology in collaboration with Duquesne University (taking all but 12 of 38 credits at SS Cyril and Methodius) for about $7,000. total.

Fr. Jack,
I forwarded the information to him, he thought it interesting. He is in Montana, but has a heart of the Eastern Church.
