Byzantine Church has rich history in St. Louis area
St Louis Review
June 23, 2006

What is considered part of the rich heritage of the Eastern rite of the Catholic Church also is perhaps one of the best-kept secrets of the Church in St. Louis.

The Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church is just one example of the many parts of the Eastern Church and traces its roots to the time of Constantinople, known to the Greeks as "Byzantium."

While the local structure has changed over time, a Byzantine Catholic mission today exists at Blessed John XXIII Center in South St. Louis County. The Byzantine Church is one of three Eastern Churches represented in the St. Louis area. The other two are Ukrainian and Maronite.

PASTORAL VISIT - Bishop John M. Kudrick, head of the Eparchy of Parma, Ohio, visits with members of the Byzantine Catholic Mission in St. Louis during a pastoral visit in April.

++++++++++++++

The article is a bit cheesy (especially with that 'information' about Constantinople) but it is good to see a mission mentioned in the press. Even if it is just the local Roman Catholic press.

This would be the mission our Mr. Poland attended at one time.

Not to mention the first Divine Liturgy that I attended when it was in the Marian Chapel at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

I also met JP when I went to the Divine Liturgy at its newest location at the Blessed John XXIII Center.

I was also suprised that they hadn't celebrated Penetcost yet when I went to my first Divine Liturgy. I didn't know that they were on the Julian Calendar. shocked

I have visited the St.Louis Mission many times. When we lived in Indiana , we would go to St.Louis, to the Cardinals Baseball games, and would attended the Liturgy when it was celebrated on Sat. night at the Cathedral. There was a small group there, and they would always make you feel quite welcome. The Liturgy was Beautifuly celebrated. I believe that the Priests that served the mission were all from the St.Louis Archdiocese.
