+Rev. Theodore Rudy - April 29, 2005

The Rev. Theodore Rudy, retired pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, Dunmore, where he served for 25 years and retired from active priestly duty on Sept. 1, died Friday at Community Medical Center.

Born in Girardville, Schuylkill County, son of the late John Sr. and Mary Hynick Rudy, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ by the late Bishop Daniel Ivancho at Mount Saint Macrina, Uniontown, on May 31, 1954.

Prior to ordination, he attended St. Procopius College in Lisle, Ill., and received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and education in 1950. He received his theological training from 1950 to 1954 at SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, Pittsburgh.

His clergy assignments included SS. Peter and Paul Church, Braddock; St. John the Baptist Church, Hazleton; St. Michael's Church, Sheffield; SS. Peter and Paul Church, Warren, Ohio; St. Michael's Cathedral, Passaic, N.J.; St. John the Baptist Church, Forest City; St. Mary's Church, Saint Clair; and St. Michael's Church, Pittston.

On the eve of his retirement from active ministry, Father Rudy gathered with his fellow clergy as his parishioners, family and friends honored him on the occasion of three major milestones, his 50th anniversary in the priesthood, his 25th anniversary as pastor of his parish and his forthcoming retirement.

On hand for the celebration were numerous current and former parishioners and clergy from throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania.

After retirement, he made his home in the North Pocono area.

Surviving are a brother, John Rudy Jr., Laureldale; three nieces, Carol Guldin, Deborah Rudy and Barbara Candelaria; grandnieces and grandnephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Saturday with Hierarchical Divine Liturgy offered by the Most Rev. Andrew Pataki at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, 511 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with area priests concelebrating.

Visitation at the church will be Friday, 3 to 7 p.m., followed by a parastas funeral service for a priest led by the Very Rev. Francis M. Twardzik, SDB, Syncellus of the Susquehanna Valley and assisted by Clergy of the Eparchy. Interment, Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Annunciation Monastery, 403 W. County Road, Sugarloaf, 18249-9998.

Funeral arrangements by the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Dunmore.

Grant, O Lord, eternal rest to your departed priest. Comfort those who Father Theodore Rudy leaves behind. Amen.

Death has no victory. Death has no sting.

Great is the faithfulness of the Mighty God he served!
