May the Lord in His mercy guide our public health officials in dealing with this epidemic. May He show His mercy upon all those who live in endemic areas, and especially upon our friends in Toronto who have been personally affected by the disease, or who live in fear.
May the Lord show His mercy.
(The Boston Globe reports this morning that busloads of pilgrims from Toronto to the Marian Fathers' Shrine of Divine Mercy are being asked not to come to this weekend's pilgrimage. 20,000+ participants are expected and there is concern that someone among the 450 Torontonians might carry the disease to other pilgrims. These folks must feel terribly hurt. May the Lord help them.)

Prayers....
May the Lord help those stricken with SARS to endure and return to full health.
May the Lord lead our health care professionals to take the best steps towards containing and eliminating the spread of SARS.

O Holy and Mighty God, For our caregivers, health professionals and the afflicted please have mercy!
Restore our people, Your children, to good health and help us overcome and contain this scourge
Help us to control the spread of SARS and to find a cure
Give Your people the strength and patient hope to overcome these modern health risks
Through Christ our Lord, Amen
And may the holy Mother of God pray for us!

May the Lord keep us from those fears which might be unnecessary. May He, in His Mercy, grant relief to those who suffer from SARS and bring the epidemic to a swift close.

Lord, have mercy on those who suffer from SARS, especially those who are now wrapped with fear by this dreaded viral "unknown."
Let your especial mercy envelop the City of Toronto and its people in these days of their suffering!

Dear Friends,
SARS? Did someone mention my neck of the woods?
May the World Health Organization withdraw its travel advisory against Toronto over SARS.
May St Roch, Patron against pestilence, intercede for us all!

With thanks to the Almighty for prayers answered, the WHO has removed Toronto from the list of "to be avoided cities".
Now, we can all go to Toronto next Monday and have coffee with Alex in his office.

WOW! I'm not sure whose intercession--St. Roch's or Alex's--is responsible for the lifting of the travel advisory. Both are powerful with the Lord, I'm sure!
Alex must feel as if a great burden has been lifted from his and all Torontans' shoulders.
We have a shrine to St. Roch at our RC church here in Miamisburg, OH. I have implored his intercession in the case of my mother-in-law, who recently has been diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer.

A silly question: is it St. Rock or St. Rohsh.
And may the good Saint intervene for Martin's mother-in-law, and for all who live with cancer.
May the Lord banish this horrible SARS virus from the face of the earth and grant peace to those who live in fear.

The SARS virus is gradually, but surely, "imploding" in Toronto and elsewhere, thanks to the intercessionary powers of our saintly patrons.
This is just what THE Dr. John ordered!

Dear Martin, You are indeed fortunate to have a shrine of St Roch of Montpellier (however one pronounces his name!). There is a miraculous shrine of him in New Orleans at the Campo Santo where people leave all sorts of votaries and I'll visit there next time I"m in the Big Easy! My father was almost dead from the cholera at an early age when my grandparents' Polish neighbour told them about St Roch. They all knelt by his bedside and prayed for about half an hour. My grandmother held onto dad's arm the whole time and she told me it was already cold. But soon his body warmed up and he sat up, asking for food. Just like my dad! And St Roch was always honoured by our family as a patron. When dad died, I took his framed picture of St Roch from his office as a memento. I had to bring it back - there were all sorts of noises, doors closing etc. throughout the night. Our priest told me to return the picture until after the forty days were up . . . St Roch is also a patron of dogs since a dog brought food to him in the forest. Eris in peste patronum . . . God bless, Alex

Dear Dr. John,
St Roch was a French saint who lived and worked in Italy - they imprisoned him in Montpellier when he tried to return there, but there is great devotion to him there anyway.
So it is "St. Rosh" in France and "San Rocco" in Italy.
In Ukrainian, we call him "Svyatey Rokh."

Christ is Risen! During Bright Week esp. let us remember in our prayer, those who have died from SARS and those who are still afflicted with it. Let us pray for those family and friends and esp. the medical staff so generous in their service of the victims. But, let us also pray for a reasonable, wise, and prudent response to this fearful new virus. It is one thing to let people know they have permission to not kiss icons or the Plaschenytsia, but to forbid it entirely or to remove icons from Church or distribute Holy Communion with toothpicks... (yet insist that the Faithful pack themselves check by jowl into a crowded Church during the most crowded time of the year..... Apparently a company in New York, US, forbade (on pain of suspension) to let one of their staff come to Canada (not even Toronto proper) due to fear of SARS, so the person had to miss Pascha with family, friends and at their home parish. A real shame. And due imo to an unreasonable fear. Here is some information I was emailed concerning SARS: the article is called: "Just the Facts, Please..." -from the Toronto Star Just the facts, please . . .
In light of WHO's ban on travel to Canada, Fox News reported that "Toronto is a virtual ghost town" - that must have been news to the 100,000 people who turned out for the annual Easter Sunday parade. Fox went on to say that 'Canada is suffering worse than China" - an interesting statement since China has a reported 2,422 cases of SARS with 110 deaths compared to Canada with a reported 327 cases and 16 deaths.
To date, 76 countries have implemented screening procedures for travelers arriving from SARS affected areas. Australia is imposing a seven day quarantine on people returning from SARS hot spots, including Canada.
The Marion Fathers have organized a Mass Sunday in Stockridge, MA. They were expecting 450 to attend from Toronto. They have asked Canadians not to come to the Mass and if they come they will be asked to leave.
What the rest of the world thinks about Toronto has changed from a place with the CN Tower and a cheap buck and "New York run by the Swiss" to one where a plague is spreading like wild fire, where all Torontonians are diseased and are locked in their homes in fear of a killer virus.
The reality is quite different - Toronto (and Canada) are waging a successful fight against SARS. The problem is that there is no "news" story in good news. Yes, if you get SARS it is terrible and yes, SARS can kill.
But the facts here in Toronto are:
- We've put 10,000 people in quarantine and almost all of them came down with the same disease - a massive case of boredom.
- More than half of all the 257 confirmed cases have been discharged from the hospital.
- Today (April 25) is the eighth day in which no new cases have been reported among hospital staff and the nineteenth day since there have been any new cases in the general community. (Yesterday WHO admitted they had not known these facts when they issued their travel ban on Toronto).
- Three schools quarantined almost 2,000 students and staff - the number of cases out of those schools = zero.
- Hewlett-Packard quarantined some 200 people after a man with SARS symptoms mingled with co-workers. The number of cases which developed = 1
- A man with SARS went to a conference in Montreal. Almost 500 people were quarantined. The number of cases from these people = zero.
Toronto's main problem now is an image problem. We lack a Guiliani to speak for us - to get the message out that we really are fine - that life goes on as normal outside of the hospitals. XPICTOC BOCKPECE! Herb
