Could you please keep in your prayers a woman at the school I work at that is being physically and psychologicaly abused by her husband. She has 3 small children at home, 1 of whom is disabled. Financially, she cannot leave him and support her children at this time and so it is a pretty desperate situation.

Thank you all so much!!!!!

May the Mother of God, who fled into Egypt with Her Son to escape Herod, protect her!

May the great Mother of God, the joy of those who sorrow, guard and protect your friend, may the holy angels surround her and keep her in safety. Amen

And may somebody please look into her legal options, and call the local domestic violence organization to find out what resources there may be for her!

And may St. Rita intercede.

Dear Mother Sharon,

In that case, St Thomas More is the patron of lawyers and legal workers.

King and Lord,

May the real men of her community come to her aid and keep her and her children from all harm: physical, mental, and spiritual.

Good Saint George, Soldier of Christ, place thy lance and shield between Christ's handmaiden and her foe!

Amen

Cases such as this are truly serious given that when a woman in an abusive marital situation seeks outside help, this can sometimes set off the husband and make him turn even more violent.

It is almost as if he considers the woman to be "his property" to do with and even to dispose of at will.

Yes, indeed, Alex and that has been my worry. But I am wondering what I can do practically and discreetly for her sake and the kids in consultation with other good friends of her at work who know the situation as well.

Dear Brian,

Getting the couple to counselling may be tricky for these reasons.

But perhaps you could discreetly get in touch with someone who deals with such situations, with the woman's approval, of course, and see what steps could be taken - nothing drastic at first.

Physical abuse is always a crime. And it doesn't get better - it gets worse.

The children are better off with their mother.

They would not be better off if their mother wasn't around . . .

Where I live, we have homes and shelters where wives and children are provided with the security and shelter they need while domestic, legal, and--sometimes--criminal issues are resolved. The longer her abusive husband can control her, the more violent and potentially lethal he will become.

If direct action is required... then so be it.
