Please pray for Martin Duffy and his daughter Hanna, who died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning around the block from me. He was 37. His wife and other child are in critical condition.

Please pray also that these tragic deaths stop. They happen all winter long!! mad 3 people in CT, more on LI.

The CO detector in my house was beeping a few days ago and it ticked my landlord off so much that he REMOVED it. mad mad My wife and I have been sleeping with the window open in 6 degree weather, but hey it beats dying.

I have to have a few words with my landlord when he comes back into town.

Pray for all in cold climates!

In Christ,

Latin Trad

Dear LTrad:

What a tragic, and senseless, way to die!

My prayers join yours!

(I have to check ours.)

PS: I hope sleeping with windows open in a 6-degree weather is not a pretense on YOUR part NOT to let go off your bride!? biggrin biggrin biggrin

I will keep them in my prayers. Yes, a couple of years ago there was a doctor here on Long Island who committed suicide by running the car in his closed garage. To make this tragedy worse, he ended up unintentionally killing both his wife and child by CO poisoning.

In Christ,
Anthony

CO poisoning is a HUGE problem, especially in cold or disaster situations, and especially amongst folks who do not read English well.

There was an ncident here in Columbus just a few weeks ago where tragedy was barely averted - a gasoline powered heater running indoors. Mom and four kids escaped, but only by the grace of God.

How often does it need to be repeated? COMBUSTION MUST BE VENTED!!!!

You can purchase your own CO detector at virtually any hardware store, Lowes or Wal-Mart-ish place. If you know you have a CO issue, I STRONGLY suggest you do so, and if your landlord refuses to remediate this life-threatening situation (and chronic CO exposure has its own set of hazards) take whatever legal action you can. A good place to start might be your local health department. If you get no action, call your local news station...

Prayers for your safety - and that sanity will prevail.

Dear Anhelyna:

Don't you worry, LTrad has it all figured out: leave the windows open in a 6-degree (Fahrenheit, I presume) weather and cuddle the bride THISCLOSE for her "protection" from the weather and all, till kingdom come! cool

LT:

My prayers, too, for Martin Duffy and his daughter. Also for his spouse and other child. Sadly, they may have brain damage, depending on the length of time they were in that atmosphere. As I understand it, CO bonds to the red blood cells and makes them change so that they can no longer be involved in the oxygen/CO2 exchange in the bloodstream.

Lord, receive these innocent victims into Your Kingdom, forgiving anything they may have done to offend You through human weakness. Please, too, change the callous heart of LT's landlord. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, O Savior, grant these petitions. AMEN.

LT:

Go get one of your own CO detectors. they're not that expensive. Nothing compared to hospitalization or a funeral. You have the right to have it. Do it for yourself and your new spouse. Protect her; she is now part of you.

You may have recourse in your state under landlord/tenant laws. The landlord is typically required to provide a safe habitation. Call Legal Aid if you need to do so. Don't wait. I used to teach consumer education in a high school and can tell you that you've got lots of rights as a tenant. Go get him!!

Let us know how things are going. We, here, care about you and your new spouse.

Some good news, fellas (& ladies):

My landlord said he had gotten spray paint into the CO detector, which was why it was beeping, and why he removed it. My wife got another CO detector, which revealed a level of 0 ppm in our apartment. smile smile smile

In the Duffys' house, the level was 400 ppm. The maximum safe level is considered to be 50 ppm. Houses have been known to reach as high as 800 ppm, which kills in a matter of minutes.

Lord protect us all!

LT -

Glad everything is ok at your home.

A few years back in Bakersfield somebody was burning a barbecue in his house to stay warm, and he died. It was just before Christmas. A local heating & air-conditioning company then offered to fix anyone's heater for free if they couldn't afford a serviceman.

Dear Lord, take the victims who died of co to yourself. Heal those who survive and are afflicted by its results.

Keep all who live in places that require heat for warmth in living spaces safe. Lead them to take those actions which are prudent for their welfare.

Grant LT and Susan a long and happy life.

May they never need weather as a stimulus to keep warm together!
