Just before I left the office tonight I received a phone call from my mother, informing me that my second cousin Eleanor had passed away overnight. Normally, when anyone it passes it is a sad occasion, but in this instance it struck me somewhat hard, because of the person that Eleanor was.

Eleanor was a young nursing student in the mid 1950s, when two months shy of the introduction of the Salk vaccine she came down with Infantile Paralysis otherwise known as Polio. She was engaged at that time to my cousin Bob. She suffered with permanent paralysis to her legs. In the height of her affliction she even gave my cousin an out to marrying her as not to be a burden to him. He would not hear of it. About a year and a half later she converted to the RC Church (She was not raised in any faith) and with leg braces and crutches was able to amble down the aisle and marry my cousin. From their marriage of just short of fifty years, she bore four children and raised them, was able to learn to drive with adaptive controls, and never once used her disability as a means of gaining pity from anyone. I always marvelled at her cheerful and determined spirit as I grew up, and though later in life, her muscles became weaker, she was no longer able to walk even with braces and crutches, being forced to use a wheelchair. She was a definite icon of the possibilities of the human spirit and the power of God. I know I will miss her.

I ask for prayers for the repose of the soul of my cousin. I pray that she will be granted eternal rest where there is no pain, suffering or sighing, but life everlasting.

In IC XC,
Father Anthony+

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

May our Lord God have mercy on the soul of His servant, Eleanor, granting her forgiveness of all her sins and transgressions.

My sympathy to you, Father Anthony, on the loss of this remarkable woman who graced your family with her spirit.

Memory eternal!

In Christ,
Alice

May Elenor's memory be eternal+

What a wonderful job our dear Lord gave her for this earth. Though it was hard, she must have touched countless lives for him. Wow, what a witness. May all rejoice in knowing Elenor in her life.
