Session I of the II Intereparchial Synod of the Eparchies of Lungro, Piana degli Albanesi and of the Esarchic Monastery of Grottaferrata on the theme of "Communion and the Proclamation of the Gospel," took place from October 17-22.
Gathered in the monastery church were 120 participants of the 170 invited. The synod opened with the Divine Liturgy concelebrated by Bishop Ercole Lupinacci (Lungro), Bishop Sotir Ferrara (Piana) and P. Emiliano Fabbracatore (Grottaferrata). On Tuesday the 19th the synod discussed the Prologue and draft document "Sacred Scripture and the local church." On Wednesday morning the document was "Cathachesis and Mystagogy," and in the afternoon, "Formation of clergy and members of institutes living a consacrated life." All of Thursday was dedicated to "liturgy," while Friday the topic was "Particular Canon Law." All the draft documents were approved with ammendments after lively discussion.
The assembly will meet again in mid-November to consider other draft documents and a third session will be held in January of 2005 for additional ammendments. (Translated from the Italian by Vito)

In perusing the listing of new members, I see that we have an Italo-Byzantine from New Orleans among us, which is great news since the Italo-Greico-Albanians are under-represented here. Welcome Lorenzo. Many years, Neil, who just realized that, 2 days ago, he celebrated a year as a registered member of the Forum (lurked  for a long time before that)

I wish that Americans of Southern Italian (and especially Sicilian) descent would gather together and organize some sort of Italo-Byzantine Catholic Church outreach, to get back in touch with the original expression of their Catholicism.
I suppose the same goes for those Southern Italians and Sicilians living in the old country, too. As an American of {partly} Sicilian descent, I'd welcome a greater awareness among Sicilians concerning the Byzantine tradition.
For better or for worse, Sicilians and Southern Italians are firmly entrenched in Roman Catholicism, and have been for the past few centuries.
I was born Methodist, but part of my mom's family is Irish Catholic amd dad's family is Sicilian Catholic, but I end up being a Catholic of the Roman Rite, instead of my ancestral Byzantine or (going way back) Celtic Rites. Ironic, isn't it?

Yes Andreas, I have seen this article and it's basically putting forth the same info that I have listed in the opening post of this thread. I read somewhere recently that representatives of the Orthodox Metropolia of Italy under the Ecumenical Patriarch are attending the synod as observers.

Neil, If you run across confirmation of the Albanian Orthodox attending please let me know---in the meantime I will ask Zoti (Father) Mario, the Italo-Albanian chancellor of the Lungro Eparchy if he knows. By the way, Bishop John Michael (Botean) had Fr. McCarthy from your way speak to his clergy and parish reps at recent eparchial retreat. Vito

Usually, from the Orthodox side, in ecumenical matters the Patriarch of Constantinople is expected to take the lead. He may have his own observer attending, or one from his Metropolitanate in Italy (as mentioned above), or his auxilliary Bishop of Philomelion, His Grace Ilia, who heads the Seminary in Durres and a small Diocese in America. My papa never taught me Sicilian; in fact I think he's forgotten a lot of it since he rarely uses it anymore. Good thing, 'cause I hear Sicilians can't converse with Italians anyway (when speaking Sicilian, not the italicized version of Sicilian).
I guess I'll have to learn on my own!

Andrew, Only when you formally retire from the Forum . You do such an excellent job in looking out for and promoting our sister Church's interests, that the rest of us can afford to remain linguistically challenged  . Many years, Neil P.S. Vito, not to denigrate your excellent work in promoting the Church, but everytime someone takes up its torch, they seem to eventually fade off into the sunset and the role reverts to our Orthodox brother - I think he's secretly in dual communion, like the Italo-Albanians were during the time of the Patriarch of Ohrid .
