Christ is risen!

The Knanaya Catholic Eparchy of Kottayam has been raised to the status of a Metropolitan Archdiocese according to an announcement on the website of the Syro-Malabar Church:

"On 9th May 2005, the Major Archbishop Mar Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil elevated the eparchy of Kottayam to the rank of a Metropolitan See without a suffragan eparchy and Mar Kuriakose Kunnassery as its first Metropolitan, having obtained the consent of the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church and the no-objection of the Holy See with the explicit understanding that the Metropolitan See of Kottayam is to remain without a suffragan Eparchy. These provisions were made public on 12 May 2005, at 3.30 pm at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia at Mount St. Thomas."

Congratulations to the Knanaya Catholics and to their new Metropolitan, Mar Kuriakose Kunnassery.

Many years!

CHRIST IS RISEN!

Many years to Mar Kuriakose and all his flock. But erecting a "Metropolitanate" on the express condition that it does not and will not have any suffragan eparchies seems both bizarre and pointless. It is one thing to have such a Metropolitanate because in the past, when the Christian population of its territory was much larger, there were suffragan eparchies; history has its claims. Creating such an anomaly makes an explanation appropriate.
