I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I am once again in need of your prayers.

In its wisdom, my university has continued the policy of accepting more students than it can handle. As a result, finding and registering and actually getting into classes has been a pain in the ________ for over a year, for me and for others. A lot of times we have to settle for something other than what we wanted because what we wanted was more than full.

At any rate, the semester starts this week, and for the life of me, no matter how I've tried, I can't get into any of the classes I wanted. I will keep trying, and will probably end up late-registering, but I'm worried that I'll either get stuck with classes that don't work toward my major or minor, or even worse, that I won't get enough classes or any at all.

Would you please pray for me that something will work itself out, and soon, so that the first couple of weeks aren't the headache they were every other semester? Thanks...

Dear Catholicos,

May St Thomas Aquinas, patron of education, bless, protect and guide you, especially now.

May St Albert the Great, patron of scientists, be your mentor.

And may St Jude, patron of hopeless cases, show you a way out of what seems like a mess, real soon.

Besides, when it comes to class, you have that market cornered already!

Where is your university? What classes lack faculty? I teach Theology, Church history, and Comparative Religions. Is there a need for faculty in those areas?

May the Lord come to the assistance of our Brother and Friend, Mor Ephrem. And give him the strength and constancy needed to achieve his goals.

And, since the Lord helps those who help themselves, go to your academic advisor, and bitch, whine and holler -- frequently. It is his/her job to ensure that you do what the college requires in order to gain your degree in your preferred major and minor. And sometimes, they will intervene to ensure that you are able to follow their guidance in terms of required and elective courses.

Go get' em!!!

And Blessings! (And prayers.)

May the Spirit of Wisdom guide and strengthen Mor Ephrem for the daunting task he faces.

I think Dr. John gives good advice, though I am sure that you are working at it already!

May the Lord of wind and rain and sun bring a warming to South Dakota and other frigid places.

Thank you, friends, for your prayers...with them, I was able to get one of my classes...not exactly one I was looking forward to, because I don't like night classes, but it's three hours, once a week, about early and medieval Christianity, so it shouldn't be so bad...I just don't like night classes...but at this point, I'll take anything I can get my hands on.

Gosh, I never thought I'd be so enthusiastic for school...just wait till all my classes fall into place...then the real me will return. smile

Mikhail, I'm praying that South Dakota gets as warm as I'd like Albany, New York to be...as I was bringing in my things from the bus, I almost got "gone with the wind"...my wool coat served as a sail...oh man, it is cold and windy... smile

Dear Catholicos and Mikhail,

As for the weather, things could be worse, you know.

You could be in Canada . . .

Although it's been pretty warm in Toronto (today it is 5 degrees Celsius - I don't know what that is in your Republican calculations).

Dear Alex,

5 degrees Celsius = 41 degrees Fahrenheit
38 degrees Fahrenheit = 3 degrees Celsius

It's three degrees here, Alex...take that!

Mor, just don't forget not to drop (God forbid you should ever have to) a course one hour after the appointed deadline. I speak from experience.

Enjoying your studies--now you've made me envious. Accounting isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I pray you do excellently in all your academic duties.

Alex, are you complaining? This is the best winter we've had for years (some of us were even hoping for a green Christmas!), assuming there are any similarities between Montreal and Toronto weather. If that be the case, then I suppose it proves that you Toronto folk are just, well, colder people than us jubilant denizens of Montreal. No wonder the crime rate is higher over there.

Patriotically yours,

(in a Syrian way, you see; I don't need to beleagure myself with the trademark Canadian/Quebecois identity crisis characteristic of the province),

a fanatical Montrealophile,
(note the comma)

Dear Samer,

Yes, I like Quebec and you people are warmer than most of the WASPs of Toronto,

I've started to learn French so the next time I go to Quebec I won't have to face the prospect of starving in a French-only restaurant.

And, Yo Catholicos, did you get a low grade in a logic course or something? We're still a little warmer than youz guys down there.

And it is going to be 7 degrees Celsius tomorrow!

But thanks anyway for the Fahrenheit conversion.

How's your girlfriend?

Alex

Dear Catholicos,

It's great that you are getting the excellent education you are!

It's too late for me, new ideas are lost on this fellow - you might as well be talking to the wall.

But I think we may have to eventually listen to Steve and head south.

There are plenty of shrines and historical monuments to keep guys like us busy down there. And shops and malls to keep our lady friends occupied too . . .

Glad you are having a warm time of it, Steve . . . Not that I'm bitter, MIND YOU . . .

In Our Lady of La Leche,

Alex
