My son is turning in his write up for his planned Eagle Scout project. He turns 18 in less than three months! If there are any old scouts out there you know this is a tight schedule. Please pray all goes well, and project is approved quickly. It is a patio at our church in remembrance of Deacon Charles Appel, eternal memory. Will include Papal flag and American flag as well.
Thank you

Hi Denise,

Oh wow what fun. Congratualtions!

Lord, please grant him all the grace necessary to complete the project efficiently over the next few months. That the approval comes quickly without delay so all of the work may be completed in a timely fashion. Also, the physical prepration of the project be completed without any mishaps or hindrences. And may he be a witness to many young men of God's love in their lives. And grant mom the peace when it seems like they are not moving fast enough.

As a mom of two Eagle Scouts, been there, done that! Enjoy all of the excitement and nervousness of the process and event. It will be fun to look back, remembering how crazy he made you attempting to complete something that he really don't understand how it will effect the rest of his life.

Our oldest is 27, and I see in him the gifts of confidence and perserverence he received in those years. A gift missing from so many young people, and he is not afraid of adversity. Our youngest is 18, and just finished his Eagle Scout last October, in fact the last merit badge was finished 2 weeks before he aged out. I still see them shaking their heads, going I can't believe I really did it!

Dear Rose
Thank you for your insight. Yes, I need a prayer that I not get impatient when he seems to not be moving fast enough. And now I find out he has
3 merit badges to finish!!! Once approved I think it will get done quickly, my husband will see to that. It seems a very good sign that the adjacent Baptist church has this hugh pile of unused bricks they are willing for us to take. We just need to haul them about 100 yards to the patio site.

I hope my son finds this as positive an experience as your two Eagles.
Thank you again

I pray that all goes well, if you need to yell...email.

Oh easy recipe for sloppy joes use ground beef, campbells tomatoe soup, and salsa. It lets them get thier fill, and doesn't cost an arm and leg to feed the scouts when they are working.

Thank you all for your prayers.

Update: The plans for the patio were approved right away, a good sign. Then the work began.

My son finished (finally) the brick memorial patio and turned in the final report just 4 days before his 18th birthday. Oh, the last week before his 18th birthday were nerve wracking!! "I need 6 letters of recommendation??"
oops.

We had been having a drought of sorts for several years down here, the lakes were 10 feet below normal. So this spring we had probably the wettest spring on record. One lake is now 3 feet above normal. Heavy downpours interferred with many of his workdays, and the project took longer to complete than expected (isn't that always the way!). That was very nerve wracking, especially when trying not to nag too much frown and his 18th birthday getting closer and closer eek eek

But he finished it Memorial Day weekend biggrin . After the 8:30 Liturgy on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, the congregation walked out to the patio for the dedication. The granite memorial stone weighed 280 pounds so several of the parish men helped lift it into its final spot facing the American and Papal flags that were also part of the project. The granite stone was in memory of our Deacon Charles Appel, a veteran of two wars: WWII and the Korean War. So it was fitting that the dedication actually fell on Memorial Day. Fr Phillip Scott said the blessing and sprayed holy water on the stone. (my favorite photo is of the men helping move the stone into place -- something about the final work done as a community)

Now my son's project just needs to go through the Eagle Board of Review. If it is approved and he receives his Eagle, the church would like to send an article about it to the Eastern Catholic newspaper. You might be able to see his project!

Praise God!
Congratualtions to your son!

And congratulations mom and dad on a job well done. This is quiet an accomplishment for a 17yr old boy. It is amazing how they come up with the ideas and implement them like they know how to do everything. It is wonderful how the men in the troop, gently guide the young men through this maze, building on the foundation that the parents have set forth.

When we have gone through all of this time with our sons, we can understand why the Boy Scouts are under such attack these days, but those forces will not triumph. It gives young men an invaluable resource for life.

I really encourage all parents with boys to seek out and find a really good scout troop and get your boys involved. It will be a decision you will never regret.

Dear Rose,
thank you for your kind words. Now I understand why the mother of the new Eagle scout gets a pin.
We've earned it! biggrin
