Glory to Jesus Christ!

Archamandrite Anastassy (Newcomb), dean of the Old Holy Virgin Cathedral in San Francisco of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, died last Friday after a long illness. Aside from being a very holy monk, he was also a great friend of Catholics, and Byzantine Catholics in particular. He was actually Catholic in his youth, even a one time a seminarian, but in the 1950's, he met a retired Russian bishop, converted to Orthodoxy, and went to Mt. Athos, where he did his novitiate in the Monastery of St. Panteleimon. After having to leave Mt. Athos after political turmoil, he settled in the U.S., was ordained, and served as a spiritual father for many.

I had the fortune of meeting him four years ago, before I went off to seminary, while living in a Catholic retreat center. He had come to visit and even attended Mass. He was very kind to me. I have visited him at the old Cathedral several times, and he has given me such things as an icon of Christ and one of his prayer ropes, both of which I treasure.

I will now become a monk this Pentecost because of him. I commend him to your prayers.

Eternal memory!

Blessed repose and eternal memory to the servant of God Anastassy. So svyamtimij upokoi, Christe, vichnaja pamjat.

And may the descent of the Holy Spirit enlighten and enflame the heart of the monk Arturo as he begins his climb on the ladder of the angelic life.

Memory eternal

O Lord, receive the soul of Your servant, the priest-monk Archimandrite Anastassy, a holy man who has given spiritual inspiration to our brother Arturo and who has now departed from this earthly place; lead his soul to rest in a place of light, happiness, and peace, where there is neither pain nor suffering, neither grief nor sighing, but only life everlasting. And as You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, remember the years of Archimandrite Anastassy's service to You and to Your people, and forgive him every sin he has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin, for You alone are without sin and You are the Resurrection and the Life.

And Lord, in Your Mercy and Wisdom, grant to our brother, Arturo, who has lost both a spiritual and earthly friend, the peace and consolation to know that he now has a friend in high places and allow the example that Anastassy set before him to be a guide in his own pursuit of a life in Your service.
