Hi, all !

I have some questions about icons, and I thank you in advance for your answers.

Is there a resource (website or book) which shows icons whose writing is in English? I have admired icons for years, but I often have no idea what the written words on them say.

Is there a computer program to make icons? I know that there are many programs for a variety of graphic purposes. Is there one for making icons on the computer? (Or, would that violate the rules for making icons?)

Can anyone recommend one or two good books on icons? I know the basic idea of icons, but I would like to read something of more depth and detail. For example, I would like to learn the code of symbolism and color and so on that is used to compose icons and to communicate meaning through icons. In other words, I would really like to understand all the parts of an icon. I would also like to learn some of the theology of icons. I know that they are visual representations which are to help us open a window in our souls to the realities of heaven. I know, in other words, that they are mystical tools of concentration and reflection so that the grace of God can more easily work within us. And, I know that we are ultimately to make our lives into a kind of living icon, in imitation of Jesus, who is the icon of God. But, well, I'd like to know *more.* Ideas like that are marvels, and I would like to learn more.

Finally, I have noticed that the writing on icons is in a particular style; it is in a particular script. It is an interesting script, and sometimes it is even beautiful. Is this script available in English for web pages?

Thank you all for your responses. God bless.

Dear John,

What a way to start a letter! smile

The best one volume book on icons that I've read is by Leonid Ouspensky and Vladimir Lossky and is titled "The Meaning of Icons".

Here's a link to it
www.light-n-life.com/shopping/order_product.asp?ProductNum=MEAN120 [light-n-life.com]

It covers just about everything you'd want to know about icons and then some.

There are many other good books on icons but this one tops my list.

For the theology of icons - as I recall, 'The Face of God' by Cardinal Schoenborn is very good, and it gives good historical detail also.

To anyone interested,

This is probably the most comprehensive site on the internet pertaining to icons.
