Three Indonesian Catholics executed
by Benteng Reges

Palu (AsiaNews) – The three Catholic men sentenced to death for their involvement in sectarian strife in 2000 in Poso (Central Sulawesi) were executed, this according to a lawyer representing one of them. Local sources have confirmed to AsiaNews the news. So far no official statement has been made. More to follow.
Lord, have mercy on their souls!

Earlier, the 3 Indonesian Catholics were denied their last requests to which they were entitled under Indonesian laws (and universally recognized by all nations as appropriate for persons condemned to death).

Three men sentenced to death denied last Sacraments in Indonesia
by Benteng Reges

Prosecutor's Office in Palu denies Tibo and his fellow prisoners the right to attend mass before their execution by firing squad. It also denies them the right to have a chapel of rest in the city's cathedral as requested.

May the Lord have mercy on Fabianus Tibo, Marinus Riwu and Dominggus da Silva! Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let Perpetual Light shine upon them. From the gates of hell deliver their souls O Lord!

Do they qualify as martyrs, passion bearers, or just tragic figures? confused

Indonesia political system is not based on Islamic sharia law. Where they are executed and tried are also not have local law based on Islamic sharia.

But indeed, lots of people see that they are used as scapegoat and the trial full of irregularities.

Although there was religious sentiment here, I believe it was more an ugly politic take place.

I take the ecumaniac you said also means the Indonesian Bishops Conference, which promotes and try to nurture relation with various groups of Moslems.

They are there, lobbying the case to the President. They provide lawyers and priests to accompany them. Support came also from various groups and people, Moslem and non-Moslem alike to stop the execution.

And I think they can't be declared Martyrs until every aspect of the trials they endured are cleared. The case itself is political in nature, but it is probably covered in religious sentiment to create more clashes. The Indonesian Bishop Conference saw this case in the realm of human right violation and not of religious clash.

Please pray for them, but also for any victim of injustice everywhere in the world.

To us who followed closely the case of Tibo and his friends find unfortunate that you have to come out with comments wihtout any basis in fact.

The Catholic Church in Indonesia went the whole nine yards in defense and support of the condemned men.

Indonesian Muslims, individually and those belonging to organizations, who also saw the injustice of it all, joined in support of their Christian compatriots.

Amnesty International was there and other human rights activists.

Finally, the Pope weighed in but to no avail.

The Eastern group of islands of the Indonesian archipelago is home to the largest concentration of Catholics and other Christians. Although Indonesia has the largest number of Muslims in the world, Christians (mostly Catholics) and Muslims heretofore lived side by side peacefully until the sectarian riots, to which Tibo and friends were implicated wrongfully.

Providently, East Timor, a former province of Indonesia, was able to secure her indepenedence in 2002 after a long and bloody civil war. East Timor is 93% Catholic!

What "ecumaniacs" are you talking about? mad

Executions spark Indonesia unrest

[While] [t]housands of mourners are praying for the dead men,
[t]housands of protesters took to the streets of eastern Indonesia after three Christian militants were executed in religiously divided Sulawesi.

Calm follows riots caused by execution of three Catholics
by Benteng Reges

The execution by firing squad of three Catholic men in Palu sparked protest in various parts of Indonesia. In predominantly Catholic Nusa Tenggara Timur province order has been restored. Tibo's son says father asked for forgiveness, not vengeance. Requiem mass is held in Palu without the bodies.

Memory eternal to Fabianus, Marinus, and Domingus.

"One day all our ethnic traits ... will have disappeared. Time itself is seeing to this. And so we can not think of our communities as ethnic parishes, ... unless we wish to assure the death of our community."
