The Akathist is a beautiful liturgical and literary genre, as you say.
People wrote "secular akathists" as tributes to their living friends.
For example, the Ukrainian poet-bard, Taras Shevchenko, wrote an akathist in honour of the virtues of a friend who supported him materially so he could write his poetry.
Akathists on the mysteries of the Rosary and the Way of the Cross are two I've always wanted to do.
The latter would hardly be a "Latinization" as it was practiced by Orthodox Saints like Tikhon of Zadonsk, and is used in Orthodox parishes in Western Ukraine today. All in all, this is a private devotion and would not enter into the public liturgical realm anyway.
I'll do one to Our Lady of Lourdes for you as well!Alex
Alex,

I'll make a bargain with you - write an Akathist to Our Lady of Lourdes and I will pray it in Lourdes in the Grotto - what could be more fitting ? I might even leave a copy in a little Church there too smile - you know the one I mean.

God Bless
Angela

Dear Angela,

Yes, I will definitely do that and I especially want to do it to provide an "Eastern" perspective on the Immaculate Conception - something that the old Akathist to the IC failed to do.

I may even include something on the Miraculous Medal and Montfort - but only if you are good! smile smile

Dear Marshall,

You are too kind - but as for holiness, I'm still working on it ! smile

My father's patron is in fact St Roman the Melodist - our extended family name is "Romanchukevych" ordered shortened by our mother way back when to "Roman."

The problem was that dad's first name was also "Roman" but he grinned and bore it.

If we kept our longer family name (which is still legal), and if dad called me "Roman," I would be "Roman Romanovych Romanchukevych."

Too many "Romans" for someone who is Greek Catholic, would you say? smile

* Amendment - I'll have to hunt it up during the Christmas holidays or else perhaps Richard Mammana of "Project Canterbury" will send a copy to me!

Alex, would you mind if I printed it out on a little leaflet (giving you due credit of course) to share with a priest friend in Mexico? Don

Chudovo, brat' Olexander!

Dear Alex, may this sinner have permission to present this Akathist with my hearty recommendation to a priest friend for use in front of the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe when it comes to our state capitol sometime in January?

With your permission I would like to take your text and set it up as a booklet for a congregational service with prompts for the priest, deacon and people...your name will be proudly included for credits...I can even use Romanchukevych if you like. smile

I was thinking about notating each Ikos for singing in the Pochaiv melody, Tone 8 (samoyilka) for the 1st Kontakion, and I am also toying around with some other melody (such as a podoben) for the 13th Kontakion...

This is a wonderful work, Alex. May God bless you for your effort. I just finished editing and revising a Great Compline text for a nearby parish for their Christmas usage and I can most certainly appreciate your efforts.

Dear Father Don and Reverend Diak,

You are too kind!

Please feel free to use this akathist as you see fit, for the honour of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the glory of Her Son, our Lord Jesus!

FYI, I'm now working on an Akathist to St Francis of Assisi.

The refrain that seems to ring strongly in my head is: Rejoice Father Francis, Wonderworker of Assisi, bearing on your body the Marks of the Lord Jesus!

That refrain kept repeating itself over and over and I couldn't "turn it off."

I guess I'll use it then! smile

Dear Friends:

Lest somebody has the temerity (sorry, anastasios) to dub Alex's Akathist to Our Lady of Guadalupe as "a form of latinization," allow me to say, sincerely, that it is both beautiful and inspiring!

While we await his next Akathist, let us free his mind to wander into the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi and to wonder in its divine manifestations.

Thank you Alex,

It is beautiful.Memo could you post your translation of it? I am going to talk to some locals about making up a leaflet to pass out or is it OK to publish it in the local paper?

Dear Michael,

Ah, liturgical music issues! You've come to the right place, but you're asking the wrong guy!

The Administrator, Diak etc. know a tad more than me in that department smile smile

Happy Old Calendar St Nicholas' Day!

Is there an Akathist to Saint Joseph, the Virgin Father of Jesus? If not, would Alex consider this?
