Слава Іисусу Христу! Glory to Jesus Christ!

With much prayer and reflection--as well as much correspondence, I have resolved that when I am able (probably 1 1/2-3 years from now), I intend to enter the brotherhood of Holy Transfiguration Skete in Michigan. The Skete is a dependency of Holy Transfiguration Monastery in California, and follows the Studite typikon with some additions from the Rule of St. Benedict. They are very Eastern and, I think, very much in keeping with the hesychastic discipline which I am looking for. I plan to visit them next summer, God willing, and go from there. I truly feel that in a traditional Ukrainian Greek Catholic monastery such as the Skete, I will be able to serve God in the manner that I have felt called to for years, and in the manner which I truly want. I ask your prayers for me and my vocation to this monastery...

In Christ,

+Тимофей, рабъ Божій

Dear Timothy,

Congratulations! May God's blessings descend upon you and protect you always!

St Benedict actually borrowed much from St Basil's Asketicon and so the Studite Rule is integrally Eastern.

It was also at the Studion where the first Canon to St Benedict was written and sung.

Our Lord bless you through the prayers of His Most Pure Mother, of the Holy Prophet Elias and of the Prophet and Forerunner and Baptizer of our Lord, John, of our Father among the Saints, Basil the Great and our Father among the Saints, Benedict of Nursia, of St Timothy, and all His Saints! Amen!

Timothy,

I have heard many wonderful things about Holy Transfiguration Skete in Michigan. It is said to be a very holy, happening place. By all means investigate this possibility. Please keep us informed of your progress.

Dear Timothy,

You mean this monastic establishment has the Great Schema and the degrees leading up to it?

Dear Alex,

Father Basil of the Skete says that it *does* have such. When the novice is clothed in the inner ryassa, he is considered a "ryassophore". After he receives the entire habit, he is considered a "stavrophore". It seems to me from Father Basil's message that the degree of "stavrophore" is combined more or less with that of "mikroskhemnik". Father says that "most monks remain in this degree for the duration of their lives". However, he does say that "some few" may receive the megaloskhema. He says that few are capable of it and many monasteries cannot support one who takes upon himself this degree of asceticism. However, he says that he looks forward to when the Skete can support one called to "such spiritual warfare". So it is most certain that the Skete does follow the traditional monastic degrees of the Eastern Church, both in title and in the appropriate habit.

Hope this answers your question...

Yours humbly in Christ,

+Timothy, servant of God

Dear Servant of God, Timothy,

Then this monastery is truly something great, to be sure!

With such excellent and solid spiritual backing, you cannot go wrong.

Go with God!

And they have the best jams and bread in the Upper Peninsula at their store called the Jampot...they do this during the tourist season to earn their way...

A wise decision...Fathers Basil and Nicholas studied under Archimandrite Boniface when he was still abbot of HTM at Mt. Tabor, looks like a good outfit. And a harmonius living the life of the Rule of St. Benedict with an Eastern focus...a natural fit since he was heavily influenced by St. Basil..Chevtogne in Belgium has also done this with their services in Slavonic. I just wish they were Old Calendar up there at the Skete, but O well...Timothy, all of the best, may our Lord thorugh the prayers of the Holy Studite Fathers gone to rest have mercy on you and guide you.
