I do remember individually voicing our unsolicited choice and, to a man (and woman), we hoped uncannily for the election of Cardinal Ratzinger!
I am ecstatically stunned for witnessing such a wish fulfilled.
And to think that Cardinal Ratzinger submitted his resignation as Prefect of CDF upon reaching 75 about 3 years ago but Pope John Paul II refused to accept it. Providentially!
He went on to become the Dean of the College of Cardinals as well when Cardinal Gantin retired from this position on November 30, 2002.
Cardinal Ratzinger was the compleat "alter ego" of Pope John Paul II.
Prayers for His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, and for the triumph and "glory of the olives!"

From an Orthodox standpoint, I am interested to hear your thoughts about how the new Pope will interact with us? I wish the new Pope well but I have no idea on his thoughts/policies towards the Orthodox.

Dear jporthodox:
From the Catholic standpoint, we, too, have no clue as to how this new Pope will reach out to the Orthodox.
But having been the "right hand" man of Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI might be another Supreme Pontiff with an open and warm heart for the Eastern Churches.
Those in the know say he is a very humble and pious man.

I just saw Fr. Fessio on TV, who is a longtime friend of Cardinal Ratzinger. Fessio said that if you want to know what the new Pope will do, and what he believes, read his books. Ignatius Press has published several of them. He went on to say the new Pope is incredibly kind, serene, and a good listener.

I am estactic about our new Holy Father.
Regarding East/West relations, this is an interesting question. On the one hand, Cardinal Ratzinger proposed that the East accept nothing about the primacy of the Pope beyond what was believed in the first millenium. However, on the other hand, he is a proponent of the idea of "local churches" being simply local representations of the universal Church - which is somewhat opposite of the typical Orthodox ecclesiology.
Of course, it is often true that how one governs as Pope is not always consistent with one's previous life. The demands of the Papacy are unique, as well as the graces available.

The English version of the Vatican website has apparently not yet been updated. I checked the Spanish and Italian sites, and according to his bio, our Holy Father Benedict XVI was an immediate past member of the Congregation of Oriental Churches, prior to the repose of John Paul II.

Splendid! When I studied theology we used several of his works as texts. He is a brilliant theologian.
I do not expect that he will be loved the way JPII was; already he is vilified. But he will continue the Reform of the Catholic Church that John Paul II began.
God grant him many years!

To all in communion with the Great Church of Rome congratulations on the election of your new pontiff, Benedict XVI. I just received a reply to an email that posed the above question, worded slightly different. The reply comes from a monastery in Europe that is noted for reaching out to eastern and western churches. The reply read as follows: "As for ecumenical relations, we do not know. I must only say: the Holy Ghost gave us Benedict XVI, we will have to pray and to accept what will come to us. These are my feelings and my insight on this moment".
