For the newly elected Roman Pontiff, Benedict.
The Lord preserve him and give him life,
and make him blessed upon the earth,
and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

Many Years!

I had to do a double take at your post. I thought you wrote, "Wir haben einen Pabst!" wink

One of the news reporters noted how the media was served Bratwurst one hour before the white smoke and bells. A sure fire method of letting people know who the next Pope will be?

Anyway, I think it will be a challenge once again to tell the world's media, especially the US, that it is about orthodoxy, not conservatism.

I wonder what Hans Kung is these days?

As an Orthodox, I cannot help but believe that continued reforms towards Roman/Western Orthodoxy and drawing from the legitimate well of western tradition from this Pope will help form a foundation for honestly discussing the barriers to unity (and at least create an atmosphere of mutual respect)

Liberal Catholics may like the visual/sensual aspects of Orthodoxy, but not the ascetic struggle behind the sensuality. It is much better to have a starting point of dogmatic difference, rather than start the debate with a Liberal over whether there is such a thing as dogma!

Well they probably had a choking fit when the election was announced, but in working with the media they have very little understanding as to what the church is about. Remember these are the same people that thought the consecration of Episcopalian Gene Robinson was a step in progress for that church, and how the opponents were made to look bible thumping ignorant "red necks".

This what causes confusion and problems in the church, brcause of their selected ignorance it confuses the faithful. Remember by the way they reported Pope Paul VI's first papal encyclicacl on te sanctity of life, they did all they coulf to create a revolt against papal teachings after that in the US & Canada. When was the last time you hear them reporting in a favorable light any encyclical since, with most never getting a mention. But they sure made a massive storm due to the way some priests that needed to be disciplined or handled for their of sense sexually, and with that destroyed the credibility of most priests that work and serve thier communities faithfully in accordance to their ordination vows.

Hans Kung, I am sure has some new resumes out after today, I believe to some independent non-Catholic or Orthodox college. I here they might have a lunch lady opening at these schools he would be ideal for.

The Church is in s difficult period that Pope Benedict may the right person for. Teach the fullness of the Gospel to the world, and prove that applies now more so than 2,000 years ago. If anything in his pontificate can set the stage for others that will follow, both popes and faithful, I belive that the Holy Spirit had chosen the right one, and if he can display the love an charisma that John Paul II had (and I havr been told he can) then he is going to steam roll over the media, and make them start to report new and novel things like truth, and fact. Maybe some of the disorder and faithful that believe that church to be a democracy will realize that the Leadership is called by God and lead by th promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Labels are new things, and I really do not think you can labrl God. God is God, and as the Good Shepherd, He appoints Good Shepherd to lay down their lives for the spiritual good of the church. May Pope Benedict the XVI have a long and fruitful pontificate, one in which order and faith are truly restored and that he truly lead his flock to the pastures of our Lord.

In IC XC,
Father Anthony+

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

" Do you folks remember our conversations about St. Malachy? This pope is not a Benedictine, but it's interesting that he took the name of Benedict."

Dear Byzantn,

I stated that I believed the next pope will be very knowlegable about the Middle and Far East because it is the most important area of the world today. God showed me by choosing Cardinal Ratzinger to become Pope Benedict XVI, that I was wrong, and that the most important area in the world today and in the coming years is Germany and the EU.

Isn't it funny, the minute he became Pope his whole appearance changed. I recall hearing that about Pope John Paul II by a Jewish friend of his. He said he's a nice man, but Pope, no! Then when he saw him as Pope, he said his whole countenance was different.

I wish Pope Benedict XVI well, he seems like such a saintly and humble man...and brilliant too.

MSN trotted him out for a quote in an article "Pope Benedict XVI, a wedge or a unifier?"

Here's what he had to say:
Quote
The name Benedict XVI leaves the possibility open for a more moderate policy, said the Swiss theologian Hans Kueng, whose license to teach theology was revoked by the Vatican in 1979. Let us, therefore, give him a chance. As with the president of the USA, we should allow a new pope 100 days to learn.

But Kueng already has formed his judgment: An enormous disappointment for all those who hoped for a reformist and pastoral pope.
Gee, its nice that he wants to give the new Pope a chance! I think its 'ol Hans who could learn a few things from the Holy Father.

May God Grant Pope Benedict XVI Many Years!

Doug

I think you have touched on the essential difference between the liberals and those who are orthodox Christians. The liberals think it's all about themselves. They like the trappings - liturgy, vestments, artwork, music - but not the cross that comes with Christianity. They want a cross-less religion. Following Christ is all about denying yourself and following Him. It's His game, His Church, His rules, and His doctrines that you have to embrace. It's not about any individuals and how they "feel," or "relate" to the Church. At the end, Christ will not ask how we felt about his teachings, but whether we followed and obeyed them.

Dear Friends,

Well, the only thing I can say is that I worked on legislation to declare the first Monday of Oktoberfest in Ontario as "German Pioneer Day."

And now we have a Bavarian Pope!

Do you not all see the mystery in all this? wink

biggrin Bless you, Fr. Deacon John...

Why not a Pabst if they still sell it? Some were writing things in Latin and other languages on the forum, so I just thought a line or two in the new Pope's native language appropriate. Besides it would please Meine Mutter who was German and must really be rejoicing now...she is long passed...but I think she must be pleased that a German Pope has been elected. However, she liked Miller's and Heidelburg. wink

To Spiridon,

I liked your post! You hit the nail right on the head! "The ascetic struggle" . . . as compared to the "sensual experience of the Orthodox experience" ... incence, candles, icons, beautiful singing, etc. ...

How many of us are whole-heartedly willing to enter into "the ascetic struggle of Jesus Christ's NARROW WAY"?

May the new Holy Father Benedict XVI be truly "a Peace-maker" a "Bridge Builder" "The Glory of the Olive"

Not an easy task in these times of extreme analysis and quick, quick, quick communications around the world!

Fr. Anthony, your blessing Father.

I heard a good comment about Hans Kung the other day, but I can't recall the source. It basically said Kung won't go anywhere as his whole raison d'tre is to be a dissenting Catholic. That is the source of his celebrity. In contrast, Matthew Fox went from being the daring, cutting edge, what's happening now Catholic to being just another looney Episcopalian. He of course essentially completely dropped from the limelight.

Congratulations to everyone on the election of Cardinal Ratzinger. He will make a fine Pope and I personally have a great deal of respect for him.

As to his theological rift with Kung, a portion of his bio-sketch reveals:

Quote
In 1972, together with Hans Urs von Balthasar, Henry De Lubac and others, he launched the Catholic theological journal "Communio," a quarterly review of Catholic theology and culture.

It has been said that this was done in repsonse to the misinterpretation of the Second Vatican Council by Karl Rahner, Hans Kung and others, as represented by the theological journal "Concilium."

Dear Friends,

I think that one possibility here is that the new Pope's strong stand on little "o" orthodoxy in faith and morals will have a most positive impact on Catholics relations with large "O" Orthodoxy!
