Thanks for sharing information about this web site al;though I am Baptized a EC I would hope to visit an Orthodaox Manastery someday. Perhaps you could explain why threeare no Orthodox manesteryise listed for the Ukraine.. Are the all EC? The number in Romania is truly impressive. For that many to have survived the ward and communism is impressive Thants again for sharing the info Yours in Christ Clifford

Chtec, thanks for the link.

I've taken a quick look. A nice site, though obviously incomplete, and a bit odd. I couldn't find my favourite ROCOR monastery, but did notice a Sobornopravna 'monastery' in Cleveland (serving their 'cathedral'). Also, the picture presented for a Romanian monastery in Cleveland shows a picutre of Downtown, taken from the lake - makes it look like they've taken over the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! cool

Lonely Hermit, as for Ukraine, I can easily come up with a dozen monasteriess off the top of my head. Give the site some more time.

I too noticed that the site is far from a complete index of monasteries. As is noted, they don't list any monasteries in Ukraine, and list only 22 in Greece and 24 in Russia, but they must list every possible monastery in Romania, with a total of 511. I am guessing the site is made by a Romanian. wink

My guess is that he's a Romanian-American because the US comes in N0.2 with a grand total of 60.

I think there are about double that number of Catholic monasteries in the U.S. alone.

He must be romanian to have listed all of them. In a book given to me by the priest at St. Theodosius Cathedral in Cleveland, It is mentioned that the Patriark of Romania was at least a cocialist and got slong very well with the party Officails during Communist rule so that new monasteries and churches, etc were added after WWII. Intersting/// the Book is The Orthodaox Church, New Edition by Timothy Ware zzzi find it a fascinating source about the diferent Orthodox ;churches in the world. I'm part way through it now. But from the way they seem not to like each other they seem a lot like Protesatans to me I could be mistakes Clifford

It does appear to have not a few mistakes. I would advise anyone not familiar with Orthodox Monasticism to consult with your spiritual father before planning a pilgrimage to one of the listed monasteries. I note with wry amusement that Of the three monasteries listed in Massachusetts, for example, two are non-canonical (HOCNA), although noted for excellent translations, iconography, and incense, and one is actually in Indiana.

Lonely Hermit,

HH Patriarch Teocrist of Romania is respected within the Orthodox Church. He has proven to be a wise leader, and is known to be of a friendly-nature. He has admitted to having colluded with the Communists (for the sake of the Church) and has asked for forgiveness. The Romanian Church is slowly regaining its strength and is one of the most friendly towards non-Orthodox (though there is still considerable tension with the Eastern Catholics).

And Bulgaria has a 120 odd monasteries...

On a plus point, Bulgarian archaelogists have discovered a gold covered book in Etruscan - with twenty or so pages...its a magnificent find for Etruscan scholars and it was found in good old Bulgaria *patriotic sign*

Further to my comment about monasteries in Ukraine, below is a list of monasteries/sketes in Kyiv. I have limited myself to ones located in the rajony (administrative regions) of Kyiv only, though there are a few more in the Kyiv oblast as a whole. The list includes communities of the UOC-MP, UOC-KP, one of unknown affiliation, and one UGCC monastery (I *think* there is a monastery, of sorts). I've included all contact information I could find, as well as the closest Metro or Rail stops. If anyone knows of other monasteries, or has further information on the ones listed below, please let me know - I'm already making plans for my next long weekend in Kyiv. smile

Why do the Ukie Orthodox Churches have so many more monasteries than the UGCC?

I can understand why the UOC-MP would have more than either the UGCC or the UOC-KP, giving the Soviet destruction of the UGCC and all that jazz. I suppose the reason the UOC-KP has so many is because it was part of the MP at the time of all this Communist destruction.

Would I be incorrect?
