Dearly beloved in Christ,

Christ is born !

My parish is in the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. Today we started using our new 2005 church envelopes. All the envelopes have Saturday dates on them as opposed to Sunday dates. For example the envelopes for January are dated Jan. 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. You think that's bad? Wait till you hear this!!!

I was going through the envelopes and noticed that the Feast of the Resurrection (Pascha) is on the Julian Calendar !!! ROTFLMAO !!!

Since when did we go on the Julian Calendar? The Easter envelope is dated May 1, 2005. Good Friday is dated April 29. Palm Sunday is April 24.

Check your envelopes!!

Am delighted to learn that at least one parish of the Pittsburgh Archeparchy has returned to the Julian Calendar. Perhaps the Saturday evening date is an interpretation of the Hebrew prohibition of collecting money on the Sabbath (that's not a joke; there is no collection on the Sabbath or the High Holy Days in Orthodox or Conservative synagogues - which is why tickets are made available in advance for the High Holy Days). A more welcome development might be to go off the envelope system and invite those who need receipts for income tax purposes (which is most adults these days) to make their contributions by check - I remember one parishioner who sent 12 postdated checks, one per month, every year. Made life simple.
Money, of course isn't everything. There are also stocks, bonds, chattel mortgages, collectibles, commodity futures . . .
This being New Year's Day, allow me to wish you a good Lent and a joyous Pascha, whenever you will be keeping them.

Here's a serious question on the topic: which supplier printed the envelopes?

I dug a little deeper into the envelope box. Found an envelope for Ascension Thursday on June 9, 2005. 25 days after Pentecost Sunday on our liturgical calendar. LOL

The supplier has been notified. Some type of compensation will be made by the supplier.
