Dear friends,

This has nothing to do with Eastern Christianity, but I hoped that one of yoy may be able to give me some advice on something of importance.

My wife and I are moving to a new house in two weeks, in a new city. This will be the first home that we have owned. One thing that we desperately need is a refrigerator. Fortunately, my father-in-law has a newer, relatively unused refrigerator in his garage that he is willing to give us. Here is the problem: he is in Texas, and we are in Pennsylvania.

Is there a way to ship a refrigerator from Texas to Pennsylvania? I contacted a shipping company that someone recommended, and it cost $500 to ship it. That is almost as much as the refrigerator cost new! There has to be a way to get this refrigerator to me without paying as much as a new fridge would cost... right?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Anthony,

Prayers and best wishes for the move and the new job.

AFAIK, the only cheap way to move a 'fridge is to put it into a truck and haul it yourself. A trip from Pennsylvania to Texas and back would not be cheap (and it might be hard on the 'fridge if not secured). You can get one of the cheaper 'fridges for under $500 so it's probably not worth to pay to have it shipped.

I use to do this for a living so I guess I am the person you need to ask.

To ship something like a refrigator you would go with someone like SAIA motor freight or Yellow freight, etc.

I did a search on SAIA and the cost would be $358.65

I just used some radom zip code for TX and PA. I entered 200lbs for weight (looked up a refrig on the net).

Here is your quote:

You might be able to worth with other carriers to get the price lower and enter the real information. My suggestion is to go to Lowes and buy a cheap refrigator.

Yours in Christ!

I know this sounds strange, but check out "FedEx charges" on Google. I've gotten some really, really, really heavy packages delivered by them. Check the ground transportation charges.

Dear Dragani,
I live in PA too and I am always up for a highspeed road trip. If you have a weekend, I have a pickup. With two (or even three) driving we could make the tip in a weekend. I did the same thing a couple of months ago down in Memphis, I left early saturday morning and came home sunday. Let me know if you are up for a drive with a stranger.

Anthony,

Good to note that you will be in a new home. Forget shipping the bulky fridge. Buy a newer used one in your area. It's less expensive in the long run and a lot less hassle.

BTW You haven't signed up for the Evangelization meeting in Whiting on Aug. 6. I hope you are coming.

Surely p-n-law can find a needy family in TX who'll really appreciate a newer fridge...

One of my tenants bought a perfectly good used refrigerator for $25.00. I sure wouldn't buy one for $500 and then spend a fortune to ship it.

Everyone,

Thank you for your responses. I will have to figure something out.

Anthony

P.S. Dan, I wish I could be there for the conference, but I am moving to my new house that very weekend.

I have nothing to add to the suggestions regarding the refrigerator. Just want to share my delight in the generous response of others here. Where else but byzcath.org could one find such a caring group? smile Wow...it is a blessing just to read the replies.

And, Anthony, I pray all goes well for you and your family on the move.

Have a safe trip!

Mary Jo
