I've heard that Tom Hank's conversion is an Orthodox "urban legend," despite information to the contrary on the Internet.

So they actually PRACTICE... that's good. Tom Hanks apparently said in an interview that he didn't LIKE the Da Vinci Code, but that it was only a movie.

Perhaps Mr. Hanks underestimates the stupidity of the average movie-goer.

Nah, luckily, I have a cast-iron stomach, so my dinner's still there. smile
I wonder if Jennifer Aniston practices? I'm guessing not.

And of course we are ABOVE-average movie-goers, right? wink

There are a few others out there with Greek first names, and I'm positive they are half Greek, but they deny any ethnicity...I guess they feel it's better for their career.

One is Demi Moore, (Demi is short for Dimitra in Greek), and the other is Calista Flockhart. I doubt though that they are practicing Orthodox.

Hi Zenovia,

I did a couple of internet searches, and this is what I found:

1) Demi Moore isn't Greek at all, she was named after a beauty product her mother saw in a magazine.

2) Calista Flockhart was named after her great-grandmother, who was Greek.

God bless,

Karen

Jennifer Aniston's last name was actually Anistonopoulos, not Anastassakis.

Saw an interview where she mentioned being baptized Greek Orthodox, but she isn't observant.

Karl Malden, for one, seemed to be for real.

From an article published in 2004:

Quote
By PHILIP POTEMPA
The Times of Northwest Indiana

When Actor Karl Malden accepts the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award this Sunday, he will be remembering his family roots in Northwest Indiana.

"It doesn't matter how old you are or where you might live at the moment, it's the way you were raised and where you were raised that are the most important parts of your life forever," Malden, 91, said in a telephone interview last week from his home in Los Angeles.

"I'm proud to be accepting this award, but I'm just as proud of my Midwestern roots. Most people everywhere know that I was raised among the steel mills in Gary, Ind., and that's fine by me." ...

... "I haven't been back home since that visit for the Valparaiso University graduation," said Malden, who grew up as "Mladen" Sekulovich. His friends called him "Suki" for short. ...

... "I used to get back that way a few times a year when my mother was at a nursing home in Merrillville. But she passed away in 1996 when she was 104," he said. ...

... As for television, he says "West Wing" is one of the few shows he watches. He even agreed to do a cameo role in an episode in 2000.

"Martin Sheen called me and said that even though everyone told him I wouldn't agree to do a TV role, he wanted to convince me," Malden said.

"After I read the episode script, it didn't take much to convince me. It just took one day on the set and I played a priest helping the president sort through his moral dilemmas when deciding about an execution. It was good television. I like to think I support the arts and entertainment of today that my parents would be proud of."

Malden and his wife of 65 years, Mona, have two daughters, three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. ...

Hey LT,

According to three different websites I looked at, including imdb, her family name was originally Anastassakis... her dad is Greek.

It's a shame she doesn't practice... hopefully one day she will.

Dear Karen,

We just need to get her into our church or Father Paniyota's for a Divine Liturgy. Then I am certain, she will return. biggrin biggrin

Good idea! And I'm sure living in Holly-Weird isn't too spiritually beneficial either...

I thought that Tommy Lee was Orthodox! I remember seeing an Icon in the background in one of the pictures of him as a teenager on Behind the Music. Are there any good practicing Orthodox in the Entertainment Industry? Is Melina Kanakaredes?

Dear Mizbiz you said:

I say:

There is no way that I will ever be convinced that Demi Moore, with her two toned hazel/green eyes, (that I have only seen in Greeks), her bodily proportions, (that I have only seen in Greeks) and the name Demi which is Dimitra for short, is not at least partly Greek. Besides, even her mother's name Virginia, is a common Greek name.

As for Kallista, a Greek child is always named after their grandmother, never their great grandmother...so a few tales are being spun. confused

As I said, showing ethnicity is not politically correct....especially for movie stars. wink

But if their ethnicity is not politically correct, then certainly being Orthodox would not be either.

Greeks have hazel eyes? I must be Greek then! (My great grandpa came from "Yugoslavia" his name was Niklic.) I thought that Greeks had brown eyes.
