Christ is Ascended!
I'm going off to college in the fall and I am paying for it myself(except room and board). Does anyone know of a Byzantine Catholic Scholarship? Or anything along those lines? I already applied for a full-ride scholarship but didn't get it. Please let me know if anyone knows of anything. I guess there aren't many out there for kids in the top 1% of their class.

Katie,
Two suggestions.
1.) Either you or Father Tom call the chancery and ask if they know of any, and if so how to obtain the applications.
2.) Contact the Greek Catholic Union (I believe they may have a website) and see if they may have any scholarships available.
I hope these suggestions help you. Good luck!

If you are a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association FCSLA, they have a scholarship. However, the deadline would be over for this year. Good luck next year! Good luck with the other scholarships you may find!

Katie, Local GCU lodges typically award scholarships to its members who apply. Have you and your parents completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? It can be found at FAFSA [ fafsa.ed.gov] . As you are probably discovering most, if not all, scholarships are need-based. Don't limit yourself to just scholarships. Many colleges and universities have work study programs. There are always student loans. In any event most financial aid organizations require FAFSA, so it would do you well for you and your parents to complete the application. You mentioned your being in the top 1% of your class. Does your state university or college offer a tuition waiver or scholarship for academics? The University of Arizona grants scholarships to Arizona residents to prevent student scholars from leaving the state. These are not need based. My daughter received such a scholarship, and the award was enough to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, food, etc... all but personal spending. Having a pick of schools to attend, she made it easy on us by selecting the school with the best financial package. Hope this helps...

Katie, If you borrow money only take what you need, no more than that. Spend your time in college working and studying, not partying. (If you graduated in the 99th percentile then you probably already know that.) Don't borrow more than you need. My student leans are $137,000.00+ and climbing!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'm lucky that I don't have to pay for room and bored. Since I am staying in state at a public university( University of Illinois Chamopaign Urbana!) I don't have to pay as much as some people. My spanish teacher told me not to worry too much about student loans becuase it would be an investment in myself. I plan on working at the front desk of my dorm (The St JOhn's Newman center there) and also working for the radio station there. Hopefully I'll still find timeto be on Light of the East with Fr Tom. Thanks again
In Christ, Katie g

Honestly, I don't drink that much. When I was in school, I was in a band so I didn't drink on stage because I felt it dried up my throat and adversly affected my singing. My wife Amber drinks more than I do. No,the $137,000.00+ and growing is all school loans! Katie, I went to EIU for 1 semester and I went to SIU for 2 years. The rest I'll keep a secret.

Doc, You better pray that your wife never looks at your posts, because if she sees this one I would not want to be around for that! (Where is that iron skillet or rolling pin graemlin when you need it?) Katie, Keep us up to date on your progress with your scholarships. In IC XC, Father Anthony+

Amber has a glass of wine every couple of days. I rarely drink alcohol, I don't like the taste. Unless it's a Brunello from Castello di Montalcino. MMMMMMMMM! That's smooth! And over $100.00 a bottle!

Sure Dr. Eric tell that to someone who believes you. Amber is on the right track, as 2 'standard' glasses of wine a day are recommended. Thats standard size and not bucket or vase

"My wife Amber drinks more than I do." That's OK, we no why! P.S. "Unless it's a Brunello from Castello di Montalcino. MMMMMMMMM! That's smooth! And over $100.00 a bottle!" I'm unconvinced about the bar tab. Katie G. has many future beverage stories to look forward to. I vividly see (in my memory) the football players going around collecting change throughout the year in order to purchase kegs for the end of the school year party.

Esteemed Ms Katie G: As an RC whom/who (?) is enjoying the varieties of the Catholic Church, may I be so bold as to suggest checking out the Knights of Columbus? We are a Fraternal, Catholic Mens organization and Supreme makes scholarship awards every year. Student Loans are available also. Yes strings are attached, being Catholic is one of them, I think your Father needs to be(come) a Knight as part of the deal. My local Council does award scholarships, but only to local Catholic students from one of our 5 associated parishes. ($1000 to each of the 5 parishes each year. See sometimes an RC can do good.) Check out the Supreme K of C website for more information. Rots of Ruck, Remember the best prevention for a hangover is not to drink in the first place. Some day when you have nothing better to do, I shall regale you with my son and his penance for over indulging in ethanol and having Parents Day the next morning. Well he NEVER did that again (I really am MEAN!!!! Snicker!! ) John C.
